We stopped in on our way down from the Ladybower reservoir, got some reviews up for places to eat and settle on "Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn". It's got an old country pub feel, it's amazingly well kept, clean, tidy and some amusing decor too. It's clearly been refurbished fairly recently, but it retains ALL it's character.
The food was just brilliant, it reminds you just how bad all these franchised/chain pubs have been getting over the years, i'd honestly forgotten pub food could be this good.
If your passing through Castleton (and you should, it's a lovely place) you simply have to stop here for a bite to eat.

not for the first time have we visited this pub.... the attraction was initially that we could take our dog in the pub with us....but..the food was lovely...the welcome was good..and it added to our enjoyment being able to take the dog Suzie with us. Can recommend it highly..unless of course you dont like dogs....then there are other pubs you can visit. See you again soon. John and Joy and Suzie x

We called in this beautiful pub after walking in the hills around Castleton. The pub is everything I love, old and full of character with a great selection of cask ales. We were that impressed that we are going to return in February and stay over in the accommodation for a weekend of walking and drinking

We have eaten at the Cheshire cheese on serveral occasions and have really enjoyed it, the only downside has always been how dark and dinghy the restaurant area is. It's has always been really good food being why we returned. There must be a reason why it's so dark so you can't see what your about eat or even the lack of it, the potatoes were completely insinarated completely burnt, there was loads of fat hidden in the duck stir fry gross and when we reported our concerns they didn't even apologise. WON'T EAT there again!!!!!!

Quite an 'old school' type pub. Some aspects feel quite dated - but this adds to its charm. A good selection of real ales.
