Had a meal here with friends. Food was OK. I suspect they make great use of the freezer & the Microwave. The sherry trifle was very poor & frankly amateurish. Thick cream, no sponge & lots of sherry, a child could have made it.
Nice choice of real ale.

We had lunch here on a Saturday in early May.
We were early doors (12 noon) as we had to be somewhere by 1 and wanted a filing lunch. I ordered the lamb hotpot in a giant yorkshire. The yorkshire was an aunt besies and over heated so it was very very crisp. The lamb (mutton) was tough and there was one piece of carrot in the hotpot! The side veg was giant pieces of parnsip that had been microwaved.
We were the only people in that early so when my meal came out 5 mins after (and between microwave pings!) my partners I was a bit miffed. I eventually tucked in and every mouthful sat heavy in my stomach and I was left with indegestion for the rest of the afternoon.
Service behind the bar was also very slow and my glass had lipstick on it.
We were in a rush so didnt complain but it's put me off going here again despite the selection of ales

This is the type of pub where you pop in for one but end up staying all evening. They have an extensive food menu on blackboards (although they could do with being lit as a little difficult to read when you're a little older and your eyesight is failing). Yes it's your traditional pub food but generous sizes and it's very tasty. Pub food can be a bit hit and miss but this was a definite hit. Add a couple of pints and it adds up to a good night out. Bar staff friendly and locals welcoming.

We tried this pub during our week in Castleton and kept going back. We even stayed for the quiz night (not our sort of thing) and really enjoyed it. Full marks to the quiz master and thanks to the friendly locals.
