We stayed in the 'new' Castleton hostel for a few days away in the peaks and was genuinely surprised by the excellent quality of the accommodation and friendliness of the staff. It had been about 13 years since my last stay with the Youth Hostel Association, and I can safely say that everything I knew has changed; sleeping bags stayed in the car to make way for proper bedding.

Travelling with my wife, our room was a twin (bunk beds) with en suite. Nothing particularly special in the accommodation itself; it was clean and tidy and better presented than the stereotypical "Travelodge" accommodation we've had previously. The kitchen was light an airy as were other areas of the beautifully converted manor house.

The hostel, which was easy to find by car and had ample parking. It was just a 5-10 minute drive to Castleton itself and the central location of the hostel for the areas we wanted to go was excellent. We did enjoy the trek up Mam Tor, one of the hiking paths to which can be accessed immediately by going out of the back gate of the hostel. We were inspired to to the walk from the large photo print behind reception (floor-to-ceiling height) and were even more impressed when they lent us a map and showed us the way!

Price was excellent, service was excellent and, yes, I would DEFINITELY go there again! Thank you Castleton YHA.

Stayed as a couple for a winter break as a base for walking. Place was really spotless and the self catering kitchen was large and very new. We had both dinner and breakfast at the hostel and both were good, with the breakfast being very good and excellent value compared to the pubs in the village, with plenty to eat and sets you up for the days walking. This new hostel is much better designed than the previous location in castleton, especially as there is amble parking for all (no trying to find a stop on a nearby road like a lot of YHAs). The place was very warm and cosy, sometimes too warm even when it was -1C outside we had the window ajar. The hostel is an educational one which means they have a lot of schools, one of the downsides is all the beds are bunkbeds (no doubles), but the upside is all the facilites are designed to cope with a mass of people; the drying room is massive.
The hostel is off the main street on the edge of the village which means its a bit of a walk in the dark to the pub (pack a torch or two) but within easy reach of the footpaths to mam tor etc.
Staff were very helpful and freindly as in most hostels without being instrusive.
the room was pretty good and very clean with hanging space and the toilet/shower module, we slept really well even though a bit warm. and nice security touch to have to use the room key to get into the block as well as the room.
We would definately stay here again.

There really weren't that many negatives at all,the main ones for us were after a long days walking the room is too small to chill in and there is no comfy TV room. The TV is in a hall outside the room with the sofas in it? Also not good if its -2C if the pool table is outside? plus the place could do with some lights down the driveway and the kitchen only seems to have a single set of chopping boards even thought there are 6 cooking stations?

Room Tip: Have a room in the extension rather than the main house if possible and not above the kitchen extractors!

recently done up by the YHA, this stunning property has comfortable family rooms in huge attractive gardens.

My kids loved it. Cheap, clean and staff freindly and helpful. Just outside Castleton.

Lots of space inside for the family to enjoy.

We stayed on a family break. First time family stay at a YH. My husband and I did a fair bit of backpacking many years ago but first time hostelling with our children and what a difference!
Lovely building, staff, rooms and ensuite facilities. Spotlessly clean and modern. Our children loved the (comfortable) bunk beds with their own light and power point beside their bed.
My only (minor) criticism is the evening meal was not great but to be fair it was very cheap (and the chef and kitchen staff worked very hard). All the same we think we'd eat out for our evening meal next time. Breakfast was very good.
A fantastic stay with lots to do and looking forward to more. Well done YHA!

Really enjoyed the stay here.

After its refurbishment it's a great place to stay.

The beds were sooo comfortable and it was all very clean. The internal bathroom was a tad odd as it was lined with plastic which I'm afraid was trapping a rather fusty smell.

The doors did slam and echoed in the corridors which disturbed us but by no means put us off.

The self catering kitchen in the stable block that we stayed in was beyond amazing.

I've recommended this place to friends and would definitely stay again if we could get it at the right price.
