YHA Castleton Losehill Hall
Certificate of Excellence

This was our second stay at YHA castleton and both times it has been faultless.

Staff are extremely helpful and the hostel has been modernised to a very high standard.

Previously we were in the main building and this time we were in the mews but both were excellent.

The self catering kitchen is very big and has wall mounted water heaters which are a lot better than waiting for kettles to boil.

The surrounding area is great for hill walking - the path up to Losehill ridge starts from right outside the hostel.

This big Victorian mansion has recently been refurbished and is now a top youth hostel. Our room was clean and basic (bunk beds) - it did the job well. Communal areas are very comfortable, spacious, well lit and modern. We ate in the dining room for breakfast and dinner - food was more or less what you would expect from a youth hostel in the UK - basic but tasty. It is on the edge of the village and has a lovely green rural location. Super for walking up the Mam Tor and looking out over Kinder. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would recommend.

Room Tip: Our room was a little warm, so we had to leave the window open for decent sleep (and this was in Jan...

This was the first time at this hostel having previously stayed at the earlier Castleton Hostel. We found this updated building perfectly suited to our needs as we were two grandparents with two young families of our daughters and husbands. So we had three well equipped family rooms - all en suite. The Hostel in its own 20 acre grounds, restaurant, well equipped communal kitchen and very modern - contrasting wonderfully with the old (1882) house was splendid. The cheerful staff could not have been more helpful. Large car park ( this was a problem at the previous hostel in the middle of the village) and walking routes gave immediate access to the stunning walks on Lose Hill and Mam Tor. Will certainly go again.

Room Tip: If you are a group you should consider being in the Mews which is a self contained building a short...

As hostels go this one is pretty good. The location is great for walking. The rooms are well equipped with private facilities. The self catering kitchen is spacious. There are plenty of lounge areas. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Will almost certainly make a return visit. Great base for a family / friends walking weekend.

This Youth hostel was Excellent. We loved the space in the self-catering kitchen and the drying room was brilliant for when we had soaking wet boots after a lot of walking. The lounge was very big which was great and the fact our room was en-suite was brill. Overall the stay was fab.

I went with school for a geography coursework trip. I wasnt expecting amazing as the previous year 10s said it wouldnt be. After a long walk up mam tor we got back and put our wellies in the drying room which was relatively good and then went to our rooms. There was 3 bunkbeds with clean sheets folded up. Each bed had their own small light and socket which was convenient. Two wardrobe/cupboards were there but for 1 night there was no point unpacking. The shower was big and clean and so was the toilet but the sink and shelving space was limited. We noticed that the only windows we had were on the ceiling which you had to climb on my bed for to open and then couldn't be easily closed. Our room was one of the biggest so we could live with the windows. During the evening we noticed some of the floor was damp to then realise we had damp/leak. In the night we heard dripping thinking it was the radiator realising it was the leak. By morning the floor was soaked and squelching and shoes had to be worn. Apart from that major disappointment the room was ok but could do with a table maybe. We had a spare roll out mattress which was good when someone joined our room.

Aside from the room the food was ok with good meals but they were limited and you had to pick at the right time. I have definitely had better sorry although not the worse either. The common rooms were also good but we just preferred to stay in our room. The tour guide we had for our walk was very good and had a sense of humour whilst being informative.

Overall the trip was very good apart from the room but was livable for one night but more than that i would have wanted it sorted. Great time and better than expected :)

We stayed in the 'new' Castleton hostel for a few days away in the peaks and was genuinely surprised by the excellent quality of the accommodation and friendliness of the staff. It had been about 13 years since my last stay with the Youth Hostel Association, and I can safely say that everything I knew has changed; sleeping bags stayed in the car to make way for proper bedding.

Travelling with my wife, our room was a twin (bunk beds) with en suite. Nothing particularly special in the accommodation itself; it was clean and tidy and better presented than the stereotypical "Travelodge" accommodation we've had previously. The kitchen was light an airy as were other areas of the beautifully converted manor house.

The hostel, which was easy to find by car and had ample parking. It was just a 5-10 minute drive to Castleton itself and the central location of the hostel for the areas we wanted to go was excellent. We did enjoy the trek up Mam Tor, one of the hiking paths to which can be accessed immediately by going out of the back gate of the hostel. We were inspired to to the walk from the large photo print behind reception (floor-to-ceiling height) and were even more impressed when they lent us a map and showed us the way!

Price was excellent, service was excellent and, yes, I would DEFINITELY go there again! Thank you Castleton YHA.
