“Very good well equipped hostel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2013

Stayed for two nights with my wife and teenage daughters recently. Very modern and clean, great self catering kitchen a number of decently sized communal rooms and very nice bedrooms. Very friendly and helpful staff too. The only let down for us was the food in the restaurant which tasted like it came out of a packet - Not terrible but not that great. Would be happy to stay here again though.

Room Tip: Views over the garden outside the kitchen are very good, but beware the loud sheep in the morning:)

We stayed in Castelton YHA hostel for one night in August 2013. This was our first time staying with YHA.

Location was easy to find. However, make sure you use Squires lane entrance if you are driving. Our Sat Nav told us to use the turning before that which is actually a narrow private country lane for Losehill Caravan club. (We stopped, took a look but continued driving until we saw YHA Losehill sign for Squires lane turning!) lovely 2 mins drive through the greens surrounded by sheeps until you reach the two Georgian style buildings.

Nice, friendly and helpful YHA staff at the reception. They will give you info about facilitates available on site. We reserved a on suite 2 person bunk bed room. It was small with simple furnitures but we felt it was sufficient for just a short stay. Good mattress, acceptable beddings. Remember to bring your own towels. (charges applies for towels as stated on their website)

Amazing site overall, with many communal rooms to explore around the site. Classic Library, lounge room, dining room, very spacious modern kitchen.
The site is located at the back of Mam Tor. Easily accessible through their car park gate.
Only 8-10 mins walk to Castleton village where you can find many nice local pubs.
Overall, very satisfy stay, excellent price and good standard.

I stayed at the YHA Castleton one night 7 July. It was a Sunday evening and I had been camping two nights. Staff member Becky looked up phone numbers for me and prepared me a lovely meal. Staff members Charlie, Ben, and Alice are lovely people. This place has nice wide staircases. There are books on every floor. The windows in the room I had to myself were nice and big. The shower was nice. There are lovely gardens with a stream close. The self catering kitchen is very nice. There are lovely big common rooms such as the dining room, television lounge and library. I really enjoyed my stay there. I wish I could have been longer.

Room Tip: I would choose a room on the first floor with a view of the garden

This was our second stay at YHA castleton and both times it has been faultless.

Staff are extremely helpful and the hostel has been modernised to a very high standard.

Previously we were in the main building and this time we were in the mews but both were excellent.

The self catering kitchen is very big and has wall mounted water heaters which are a lot better than waiting for kettles to boil.

The surrounding area is great for hill walking - the path up to Losehill ridge starts from right outside the hostel.

This big Victorian mansion has recently been refurbished and is now a top youth hostel. Our room was clean and basic (bunk beds) - it did the job well. Communal areas are very comfortable, spacious, well lit and modern. We ate in the dining room for breakfast and dinner - food was more or less what you would expect from a youth hostel in the UK - basic but tasty. It is on the edge of the village and has a lovely green rural location. Super for walking up the Mam Tor and looking out over Kinder. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would recommend.

Room Tip: Our room was a little warm, so we had to leave the window open for decent sleep (and this was in Jan...

This was the first time at this hostel having previously stayed at the earlier Castleton Hostel. We found this updated building perfectly suited to our needs as we were two grandparents with two young families of our daughters and husbands. So we had three well equipped family rooms - all en suite. The Hostel in its own 20 acre grounds, restaurant, well equipped communal kitchen and very modern - contrasting wonderfully with the old (1882) house was splendid. The cheerful staff could not have been more helpful. Large car park ( this was a problem at the previous hostel in the middle of the village) and walking routes gave immediate access to the stunning walks on Lose Hill and Mam Tor. Will certainly go again.

Room Tip: If you are a group you should consider being in the Mews which is a self contained building a short...

As hostels go this one is pretty good. The location is great for walking. The rooms are well equipped with private facilities. The self catering kitchen is spacious. There are plenty of lounge areas. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Will almost certainly make a return visit. Great base for a family / friends walking weekend.
