YHA Castleton Losehill Hall
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 26 July 2014 via mobile

A stunning building which has been nicely modernised without losing its charm.
Bedroom & en-suite bathroom were great - adequate, modern & clean.
Self catering kitchen - very well stocked.
Communal areas - beautifully decorated and in keeping with the style of house. Very spacious.
Grounds - magnificent. With acres to explore and pigs, goats and sheep to enjoy.
Location - perfect. 10 minute walk to town and a great base for Peveril Castle, the Caverns and Mam Tor.
Staff - incredibly friendly, helpful and professional. Was told they host many primary school groups and partner with YHA Edale for older youth groups. There were families and walkers there when we stayed - it truly caters for all.
Well done YHA - yet another gem :)

The YHA have done a fantastic refurbishment on this building. It retains the grandeur of its origins but is bang up to date with all the facilities that make YHA such a great choice. The self catering kitchen is enormous! The outside seating area is lovely; we sat and watched squirrels and rabbits scurrying about. The goats and pigs were a nice surprise as was the quality of the accommodation. We had a very comfortable 6 bed room with ensuite and, to my absolute delight, black out blinds. I hate a light room for sleeping. Staff all did their upmost to ensure everyone had a top stay. Well done Lose Hill Hall, you're ace :)

Thanks for the lovely review - always great to hear someone had a good time. I'm glad the squirrels didn't try to pinch your food - they are getting really cheeky.

We hired the west mews and 3 rooms in the main house for 8 families 35 people in total. The ages ranged from 8 to 50+. The west mews was very well equipped, spacious, clean, most of the rooms were ensuite and the courtyard was lovely to sit out on too. The children (20 of them) loved exploring the grounds. The staff were very nice and very helpful. We booked the breakfast for both days but in actual fact we could quite easily have cooked for ourselves in the very well equipped kitchen in the mews. We are already looking to book again for next year.

Thanks for the lovely review, it will be great to see you again next year. Don't leave it too long to book though - the Mews is becoming more and more popular so choose your dates quickly.

Great location at the foot of Losehill - 10 minute walk into the Centre of Castleton which has an abundance of choice for pubs / food and a great little shop with bakery. Our family of 4 stayed in 2 ensuite rooms, one was a little small but adequate with bunks. Acceptably clean for a hostel that clearly attracts families and groups of all ages and who clearly enjoy the outdoors no matter what the weather!

Lovely grounds that the kids loved to play in and meet new BF's! Fantastic communal areas that ranged from a well stocked library, sitting room and even a TV space, loved the little nook at the top of the very grand stairs..

The staff work tirelessly to please and were fantastic on all levels - we saw the young breakfast chef later on in the day running up LoseHill and that was a real inspiration for my 11 year old daughter who has already decided that Volunteering for the YHA is the way to go! Especially if you get to enjoy the Hills during the day.

Highly recommend this YHA and look forward to returning with both an adult group for a long walking weekend and perhaps a youth group?

What a find! Haven't stayed in a YHA for about 30 years and my have they changed! Fantastic location, fabulous facilities, friendly and helpful staff, great value for money. We had a family ensuite room, there was a problem with the shower, but it was fixed as quickly as they could. We had a great help and advice from Anna -a great asset to the hostel. The hostel is in a fabulous location for exploring the peaks, set in wonderful surroundings with sheep grazing outside, yet only a 10 minute walk into Castleton. We ate in the restaurant one night, which was nice food but a little too small a portion for my hungry husband! Another night we cooked for ourselves using the self catering kitchen - the kitchen was well stocked (although could do with some tumblers for juice/water), and full of other friendly like minded people. We paid for breakfast which was reasonable with great sausages! Our kids loved this place - our two year old said she wanted to stay for ever! My 10 year old quickly made friends as there was always a family or two outside playing cricket/football etc. We normally camp but decided we wanted to be a bit warmer, can't believe we haven't discovered the new yha hostels before. We will be back! Yes could be a bit cleaner in places but given the amount of dirt people bring in I think they do a fairly good job of keeping on top of it. We had two bunk beds, which were very comfortable, warm bedding, dark curtains which kept out the light and they were long enough for my 6'3" husband who was originally worried he would have to sleep on the floor. Drying room was well used during our soggy stay too. I would strongly recommended for anyone who wants the community feel of a campsite with a little bit of home comfort.

We stayed in a family room with our 3 children. They loved roaming the grounds, watching the lambs, feeding the goats and building a tree fort with the other children staying at the hostel. The location could not be better; stunning outlook and an easy walk to the village. My early morning walk up Losehill at the back of the hostel was one of the highlights of my trip.
The rooms was small but comfortable and clean. The only issue was the overheating, we were roasting and ended up sleeping with the windows open even though it was freezing outside.

A refurbished hostel, good modern fittings. Cleaning needs something to be desired, though floors and surfaces are clean, anything above are often unkempt with cobwebs flies mould etc, public rooms are better.
Bunks are new but very hard!
Food is good but heavily reliant on frozen prepared fare. Full english breakfast is OK, continental selection pretty poor.

Thanks for reviewing. You are right, the Victorian gothic ceilings are spectacular but a real challenge when it comes to reaching cobwebs in high corners - We'll try harder. Thanks for the honest feedback - it helps us.
