“trying a bit too hard?”
Reviewed 23 June 2014

Did a walk in tonight (monday). About 2 or 3 tables mid meal. Unusually my daughter, aged 12, couldn't find a pizza that really took her fancy... everything just a little to complicated. Dispite this the waitress was fine when we asked for a simple mushroom and prosciutto pizza without cheese. I ordered a risotto. The two tables who ordered after us were told there would be a long wait as chef was busy. We waited rather longer than I would have anticipated even allowing for my order being risotto. When the food came i ordered more drinks that didn't arrive and that had to be re requested after I had finished eating, as the waiting staff didn't eye sweep the room for orders on their infrequent visits to the dining room. The food itself... the risotto was underseasoned, I cannot remember the last time i added seasoning to a restaurant meal, the rice was just not quite cooked enough, giving it the texture of overcooked long grain rather than the arborio creaminess. No extra parmesan was offered. I tasted the pizza, again the dough was under salted, but the texture was ok, the sauce was underseasoned and if anything a little too acidic to be comforting. The prosciutto was lovely, and mushrooms fresh. The dessert was beautiful, chocolate mousse with hot chocolate... couldn't fault that at all. The bill was wrong but apologetically corrected. So ok it wasn't over priced but service was slow, food simply didn't live up to expectations it was 'ok'.
however, planned the menu and fresh the food is just one or two really straightforward pizzas in an italian restaurant is always welcome. I've been to Italy so i know what constitutes real italian and anglicised Italian food and I think this tried a bit too hard to be either.

“Nice Italian food - good end to a holiday”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

We were spending the weekend in Castleton and had so far eaten in one or other of the many pubs that are in the town, for our last night we fancied a change.
We checked out the menu posted outside the restaurant, and it showed a good selection of Pasta and Pizza dishes, so we decided to give it a go.
We had not booked, but the restaurant was not busy and they were able to seat the four of us with no problem, this was a Sunday evening and Castleton was very quiet.
We were at first seated in the main part of the restaurant, which was quite quiet, there were three couples sat eating, so we asked if we could move to a booth near the entrance as we feared our conversation may disturb the other diners - four Gents with a lot of catching up to do! This request was no problem for the waitress.
The food was ordered; starters of Breads and oils, and Olives, main course of Pizzas and Seafood Tagliatelle, and a Bottle of Malbec (or 2!) to wash it down with.
The starters we ordered were very nicely presented and tasted great, the Rosemary Chilli oil that came with the bread was very nice indeed.
The pizzas were very nice and a good size - The 'Devils Ar*e' the I had was fabulous.
The pasts dishes looked good too, with no complaints from anyone.
Overall this was the best meal we had in Castleton, a great way to end a holiday in the Peak District.

“Best place to eat in Castleton”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

1450 is great, the reality is that Castleton is a lovely place, but not full of 1st class restaurants. 1530's competition is pubs, and as such is the clear winner. That's not a slight as the food is great. If you are in Castleton you would be wise to eat here at least once. We always do.

“Amazing food”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Great food at good prices. Interesting choice of menu. Friendly service. Great atmosphere. Offers a more sophisticated atmosphere than the pub. Worth booking ahead as it is understandably popular.

“Best food in Castleton Peak District”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

We were greeted with a big smile as soon as we arrived at this sensitively converted restaurant, The service continued to be friendly and efficient throughout the evening. The menu is interesting and every course we had was delicious. By far the best food we had during our stay in Castleton. Booking essential for this deservedly popular Peak District restaurant.
