“Fabulous food, refurb definitely due!”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

We visited Castleton in October, saw this hotel and couldn't wait to visit it. I was rather disappointed though as the decor in our room was tired and rather grubby. However, there was a note saying that the hotel was in the midst of a refurb, so we put it down to experience. It would have been nice to know this when booking. The bathroom had obviously been done, but there were problems with the water supply. It was also a hand held shower which didn't help! The manager tried to sort the problem but apparently a pump was broken. I am sure the room will be fabulous once it has received an update although I think that the four poster is too large and imposing for this room and makes the room seem dark. We were also unable to boil the kettle from where it was placed on the dressing table as there was no available socket nearby. We therefore had to put it on the bedside table which was a little precarious. The food was amazing and the service great. Everyone was very friendly even when we had cause to complain.

Room Tip: Don't go for the four poster room unless the pump has been fixed and the refurb completed. other...

Just returned from an excellent weekend at the Nags Head. Room was great, food was excellent, service was efficient. Roaring fires and a perfect full English in the morning.

If I had to pic fault (which would be difficult), the staff could have been a little friendlier. Apart from that, an excellent time was had.

My partner and I have just have just spent the most lovely weekend in the Derwent. The room was very comfortable and clean, the bathroom could do with refurbishment but I see that this is in hand and will be done shortly. The food was amazing! The steak special was the best I have tasted for a long time and all so very fresh. The Derbyshire breakfast was beautiful and lasted us the whole day! Finally, the staff were very friendly and nothing too much trouble, they even filled our flask up before we went out! We will be back!

Called at the Nags Head for lunch/tea. I had the meat and potato pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy, I have to say, it was the best, succulent steak, good short crust pastry etc. There was plenty of meat in this pie and I have to say....scrumptious ! Everything on the plate was to my liking, I don't often say that. Well done to Ye old Nags Head, we have been visiting Castleton for years and shamefully, this was our first visit......We'll be back.

Decent selection of ales and fab menu. Good mix of atmosphere with pub on one side and a cosy eating area on the other. We ordered the sausage and mash which was gorgeous- it was nice to be able to pick the sausage, the sauce and type of mash. For the price, a third sausage would have been nice, but this may have been because we had walked up a massive appetite!

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to any other visitors to Castleton!
