“Not a friendly welcome and avoid room 3”
Reviewed 31 May 2009

We stayed in room 3 which as other reviewers have noticed has only a small skylight that is some how mouldy and an "ensuite" bathroom that is very small and is only seperated from the main room by a slatted sliding door; for the price it is pretty poor.
The level of customer service from some of the staff is also very low. Whilst several younger members of staff are very helpful other staff members are not and are at times rude to your face.

We had booked in to another Inn in Castleton, only to find on arrival (after a nightmare journey) that it was locked, and nobody was answering the bell or the phone. So, unwilling to sit in the car park for who knows how long, we wandered thirty yards down to street to see if 'Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese' had any rooms available. Fortunately they had!

The greeting behind from the lad behind the bar was very friendly. The room itself was very pleasant, although with no view. However, it was spacious, as was the en-suite bathroom, and clean, and I thought decent value for the price (£70). Breakfast in the morning was for a restricted time (8:30 to 09:00) but was very efficiently served and was more than adequate.

We also ate in the bar and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Compared to prices down south (we live in Hertfordshire) we were pleasantly surprised by the cost of the meal. Service in the evening was efficient and friendly too.

All in all, an afternoon that started badly ended up as an enjoyable stay.

The service at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn was excellent.
It is in an ideal location with the centre of the village only a few minutes walk away, the surrounding area is very picturesque.
Unfortunately we were disappointed with the room because there was no view, the window was frosted glass and if you did open the window you would only see a wall which looked like it was in a yard at the back of the building. Also when we were in our room we did find the walls to be extremely thin as we could hear traffic and people having conversations outside. The room was very clean and spacious with a reasonably sized en-suite all in all a nice room but not really worth £70.
We did eat in the pub for our evening meal the food and service were both excellent.

My partner and I went to Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese for Sunday lunch with her son who is Studying at Sheffield. (15 March 2009) We had the 'Sunday Roast' from the menu. I can quite honestly say that this was one of the worst meals I have had in recent years. The beef was tough, it probably had been pre-cooked and frozen, the accompanying vegetables were poorly prepared and presented. Gravy was used in excess to disguise the poor quality meal. We could not get out of the place quickly enough. I suggest they taste their food before sending it out to customers. Also, the coffee was luke warm and the cups 1/2 full.

Booked for 2 nights from the pictures looked lovely and lovely views little did we know that wasn't the case in room 9.
Arrived after 4 hour journey shown to the room could'nt believe how dark it was yet it was a lovely day outside when the owner had gone pulled the net curtain back and there was a frosted glass window like in bathrooms thought strange opened the window about 4 inches a brick wall right up from the other building hence the darkness was not happy at all .
Went down and complained was told their was no other rooms available.
Went and found another Hotel The Rising Sun was very helpfull they showed us the room it was lovely decided we would take it for the next day just couldn't stay at the cheshire inn more than one night.
Went and booked out the next morning refused to give our money back.
The landlady said she had given up on trying to please people all the time and said we had to pay for both nights even though she had some one ringing for a room while we were paying.
Very unhelpfull just didn't seem to care just wait for next person will never go back there again not good business people.
So be warned what rooms you go into when you book .

Stayed at the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn from 02/05/08 to05/05/08.

There was seven of us in total went away for a motorbike weekend to discover the peak district, one of our friends had stopped before so on his recommendation we gave it a go.

The Inn does good food, good drink and a hearty breakfast in the mornings.

The rooms are across from the Inn which have been converted from an old barn, the standard of the rooms are excellent with lovely decor, tea/coffee, plasma tv and real comfy beds.

All seven of us would not hesitate in going away to the same place again.

The couple who run the Cheshire Cheese were very nice and helpful so were all staff.

Brilliant all round.
