“A touch of class...Victorian style!”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

I went here with my bride to be for a valentine's weekend away, no problem with the booking £70 bed and breakfast. I recieved an e-mail from the manager with the menu attached asking if we would like to reserve a table for the evening, which was a nice touch, the menu looked well but didn't look worth the £32 per person which they were asking.
We turned up on the day to a lovely early victorian mansion house set just outside Glossop near the golf course and in beautiful scenic area. We recieved a warm greeting from the manager who offered us tea and biscuits in the drawing room and took us to our room which was 'Wind in the Willows' themed, we were staying the 'Ratty' room, again a nice touch. Don't let the room name fool you, there was not a rat in sight, the bed was comfortable, everywhere was clean, tea/coffee, toiletries, all the extras that you would expect and a good nights sleep was had by all. We ventured down for breakfast in the morning, all of which is cooked to order and was very pleasant; few minor gripes, the breakfast crockery looked like something out of 'keeping up appearances' and was so small that the weetabix wouldn't lay flat in the bowl and I got my finger stuck in the tea cup, however, it was inkeeping with the size of the breakfast, a single rasher of bacon, a junior sausage, one cherry tomato, a few mushrooms, a bit of black pudding and a distinct lack of beans, I don't know whether the beans will be forwarded to me in the post or what?!; tasty but tiny, you'll be eating again within the hour!
Overall, a lovely place, lovely setting and some nice touches (especially if you want a weekend pretending you're an extra from Downton Abbey) but be aware that this is a victorian building and so the decor and furnishings are all in keeping with the period, the rooms have antique furniture and beds and the atmosphere can be a little stagnant.

Room Tip: Book out of season for a better deal on a room!

Although this was a solo business trip, and I chose the hotel for convenience, I would certainly recommend it as a 'destination' hotel. Lovely warm welcome, old style bedroom extremely well appointed, lovely and warm (on a cold January) and very convenient for Glossop where you can find a particularly good Indian Restaurant (recommended by the hotel owner). Breakfast was just as it should be - cooked to order with quality ingredients and totally unhurried. Would love to take my wife there another time.

We have enjoyed dining here before and again we were not disappointed. Not the cheapest place to eat but just right for that special occasion. The hotel/restaurant is very tastefully furnished and our meal was excellent. As local residents we have not stayed here so can't really comment on the hotel side.

We had booked into the Wind in the Willows in order to visit family in the area. We had gone out for dinner and found the hotel cold and dark on our return around 10pm. Unfortunately there was no warm welcome, or lovely fire burning, the only option was to go to bed. The next day we were leaving after breakfast. It was disappointing with microwaved porridge and passable service. We were charged £145 and £115 respectively for the 2 rooms which basically consisted of a bed for the night. It is very sad as we visit the area on a regular basis and were looking for the warm welcome and high service the hotel promised. We will not be returning.

The hotel is in a beautiful old country house that is very well decorated and furnished in period character. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Perfect for exploring Glossop and the snake pass area. It's a little far from town (about 1.6 miles) but that made it very quiet and peaceful.

This is a lovely hotel. We received a very warm welcome and throughout our stay, our hosts could not have been more helpful. We spent our time walking and visiting the sites in the Peak District and returned in the late afternoon to relax in our room. The room was clean, comfortable and well appointed. We ate in on a couple of evenings. The dining room is intimate and food high quality. We would definitely go back. Whilst not cheap it is good value. If we could make one suggestion we would like to see the wifi coverage expanded so that the lounge areas could be used a bit more.

My stay at the wonderful Wind in the Willows hotel on Oct 17 and 18 was just right .When I was in business driving throughout the UK this was the kind of family - owned and managed hotel I dreamed about but rarely found. Peace and quite, decent sized bedrooms and great beds, ample free parking, wi-fi , good food especially the breakfasts , a very decent wine list, elegantly furnished, pub at the end of the lane if you want one and a healthy walk to town centre restaurants and bars - and very good value for money. There's a golf course opposite too .And for ramblers or amblers like me, the countryside on the doorstep is among the most attractive in the UK. Perfect.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have lovely aspect.
