Stayed at this pub for 3 nights whilst on a walking and cycling holiday and we were made to feel very welcome. Nice clean room if a little dated. Lovely food with generous portion sizes. Large ample car park across the room with secure storage for our bikes. Would stay at again.

Stayed at this pub for three nights.
The room was very clean, neat and tidy. Could do with a new mattress as the one we had was a bit squeaky.
The food, breakfast and dinner, was really good.
The staff, really accommodating, polite and helpful. The chef on one of the nights and the following breakfast was not too good at reading orders though.
Dog friendly, Oh yes - Very.
The beer, all that I tried was in good condition and appeared to be kept well. The Millstone Ale was a particularly good brew.

We had a two night stay and could have easily stayed a fortnight! The hospitality and welcome put us at ease and we felt immediatly at home. The rooms were spotless and comfortable and the food was really good and the real ales were faultless. We thought the staff we're like family members because that's how they treated us. The position of the Inn is priceless, you have everything you need on your doorstep. The walks are endless and the scenery is to die for. I stayed with my mother-in-law and two of my daughters in one large room and they were very accommodating putting us a fourth bed in there and as we thought it was that good I told my husband and he joined us for the second night and traveled up in our camper van and they didn't hesitate to let him stay in the very large scenic viewed car park over the road...the pigs kept him company! We've stayed in a lot of places over the years in the UK and by far this was the one that I would feel happy and comfortable visiting twice a year, every year!

Room Tip: We had the family room which was large with a little single bedroom on the side. I think all the ro...

Came here via Groupon for one night and when we arrived we asked to stay another night but it was fully booked. A really old hotel so the rooms etc fitted in. The food was very good and not expensive and staff were very friendly especially Tom who couldn't do enough for us. There was a quiz that night but they were doing food for a birthday party of 60 people later on so we didn't bother. Would stay here again no problem.

We stayed Sunday to Wednesday on a Groupon deal (and have subsequently found out the inn themselves do an excellent deal on 3 night breaks). The location of the inn was beautiful and there was ample parking which is always a bonus after a long drive. On checking in, we found the staff friendly and helpful. This continued throughout our stay with staff happy to suggest places to visit. The room was well kept, a good size and in keeping with the character of the inn.

We have stayed here previously, but on this occasion we were unable to secure rooms so we visited just for an evening meal. We were a group of five and had a selection of starters, I chose the pate with onion chutney and toasted bread. Very disappointed, the pate was quite hard and very chilled, the chutney was Branston pickle and the toast was two slices of a bread roll untoasted. To be fair, everyone else enjoyed their choices. For the main courses, again we all had a good selection including, sea bass, steak pie, lamb shank and chicken. All the dishes were plentiful and filling, nothing special, but good honest pub food. With a round of drinks, the bill came to £125.
As stated before we have stayed and eaten here before and rated it as very good, but overall in all honesty, the whole experience was "above average" but no higher. Maybe it was an off day, or maybe as a previous reviewer noted, the "Chef Wanted" sign is still on display outside the premises, may have some bearing.
We booked and were seated for 8pm Saturday night, at 9.45pm when two of our group asked for ice cream as a dessert, we were informed that the kitchen closed at 9pm, so no desserts !
Very strange!
We still like the place and will no doubt revisit when we are in the area, to give it another chance.
I should add that the staff were polite and friendly.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review, I have looked into your comments with regard to the pate with the chefs on duty that night. We make our own pate with fresh chicken livers, herbs ,garlic ,brandy and butter and left to set in the fridge, we don't have Branston pickle in the kitchen it should of been our own red onion chutney and we are in the process of changing the toasted bread to crusty French bread on the menu. so I believe you where given French bread by mistake, so sorry that you didn't like it, but if you had said something at the time I can assure you we would of change it for some thing else with no fuss, with regard to the desserts I can only apologise, yes the kitchen closes at 9pm but the staff on duty are more than capable of doing a couple of icecreams,
Thank you again for your review and hope you will visit us again soon
regards jerry

A great little find on the edge of Hope Valley, we stayed here on the 16th May and had a great weekend, the weather was great which always helps, the views are great from the Terrace, the staff were very friendly and helpful, the rooms very clean and well presented, we had the Ladybower and Little John rooms.
Food was good and a quiz n bingo night helped too, especially sharing the gallon of beer !!! (not great for walking the next day)!!! the breakfast was a great help and hangover cure.
Heading back here in the future definitely.

Room Tip: our rooms didn't have a view over the valley but they were lovely, there are 2 rooms that look o...
