“Outstanding Food”
Reviewed 24 September 2013

I take part in a fell race in the Peaks every year and have tried camping and B&B's but this year I decided to treat myself. What a treat it was!

I had a really quiet and comfortable single room at the back of the hotel and ate in the hotel restaurant. The food really was outstanding.

Whilst it was far more expensive than my previous experiences I did have a better night's sleep and set a new personal best in my race. Overall it was good value for money and I plan to return next year.

Booked this hotel for an overnight stay with friends en route to Sicklehome golf course nearby. Initial welcome was really friendly. We had booked what were described as "small doubles" for single occupancy and all four of our rooms were delightful and not at all small!! We ate in the award winning restaurant which was very nice but not cheap! The food was undoubtedly delicious and beautifully presented but to be honest a large bowl of veg on the side would not have gone amiss - I certainly wasn't full at the end! Breakfast was however superb and plentiful - and included in our room rate. Overall a very good overnight stop and I would certainly return.

Room Tip: The small doubles are on the ground floor and numbers 22-24 face the rear and are very quiet.

We stayed in this hotel as we attended a friends wedding at a nearby venue. The hotel itself its lovely and set in a lovely small village. The room was huge and it had the usual facilities. Breakfast was great with a great selection from the buffet and off the menu.

Only downside was being on the ground floor you hear everyone's footsteps with it being an old building, every single floor board squeaked and it proved difficult to sleep through it at times, my tip would be to get a room on the floors above to prevent this.

Overall great stay and would recommend!

Room Tip: Higher floors to prevent noise from floor boards/foot steps above your room!

This historic hotel offers everything I expected -- tasteful facilities, good restaurant, free parking behind the hotel, excellent service, and perfect location in the heart of Derbyshire. The teddy-bear smiling at me on the bed was an added bonus!

What should have been a great stay turned out to be a bit of a nightmare. Turned up on the first night our room had been booked by friends and we were confronted with "you've booked two rooms so you will have to pay for the other room. Eventually we're told that we wouldn't pay for the first night but were told as full the next day that we would have to pay for that room unless it was sold. No empathy shown, empty apologies and a disbelief that we hadn't book twice. Poor nights sleep, ground floor room are half below road level so quite noisy and very warm. Beds ok but as an old place rooms above you hear every noise. Breakfast was quite nice and some of the people that work there are very good. Didn't like walking down the corridor early in the morning and they are already throwing dirty laundry into the corridor.

Eventually got told that 2nd night had been sold online that morning but left sour taste in mouth.

2nd night poor sleep as water pipes rumbled and people above we're up late and then up early and you heard every step.

Then went to check out and this random 5% levy was added for staff. Not optional and after our experience felt very aggrieved to pay this but not an option.

Overall it looks a lovely place but don't recommend the ground floor rooms and be careful when you book online

We stayed for two nights and ate at the hotel on the first night. We thought the food was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

It was very warm during our stay, so we had to open the windows at night. There was some traffic noise since we were at the front on the main road, but very little during the hours of darkness so it wasn't a problem. The room wasn't large but it was comfortably furnished.

We were a little disappointed that there wasn't much to see or do in Hathersage, but there is plenty to enjoy within easy driving distance.

Overall a very enjoyable stay at the George

We come to the hotel to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed, the staff are very friendly, the rooms were very clean and tidy, with plenty of space. But the breakfast was first class, we had a full english all of it great quality, I did not eat again until the evening. Thanks for a great stay.
