From the moment that we arrived we felt at home, the reception staff were friendly and check in was very efficient. Our room was spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean with nice little extras such as free bottled water. Breakfast was served from 7.30 up until 11.00 which is a bonus if you want to sleep in a little later (or go out for an early stroll before breakfast). The breakfast was varied and always well cooked and presented, couldn't fault it at all. We found that the two course meal in the evening was good value and there were some interesting choices, the food was beautifully cooked and the portion sizes were just right for us. Very nice of the chef to include a complementary melon sorbet between courses. All in all a fantastic place for a short break in the lovely town of Hathersage, we will definitely be going back.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the hotel might be a little noisy due to road traffic, we had room 11 which overlooked the staff car park but also gave views of the countryside, even with the windows open the traffic noise didn't disturb us and we could hear the little stream running by.

From our arrival we were made to feel very welcome at this characterful hotel in a lovely village. The restaurant serves good quality modern food in a very pleasant space with little extras. The room was very comfortable and roomy. Breakfast was of a good quality with fresh items like pancakes and homemade marmalade making a difference. The owner/General manager ensures guests needs are met and offers suggestions on places to visit with an obvious local knowledge.

We attended for a family function recently in the private dining room. The room was beautiful and the service excellent. sadly the same cannot be said for the food . it was overpriced and the portions were poxy. I dont count 6 green beans and 5 sliced of carrot a portion of vegetables . The meat was also very dry with a splashing of watery gravy. Very disappointing.

My husband and I booked a superior double room with dinner for 1 night for our Wedding Anniversary. We occasionally visit The George for a drink when out walking in the Peak District, but thought it would be nice to spend our Anniversary there. After a walk to Derwent Edge we arrived at the hotel. We were allocated Room 15 on the first floor at the rear of the hotel. It is a beautiful room, recently decorated and has a lovely new bathroom, ideal for a soak after a long walk!. It was quite peaceful being at the back of the building. We were able to have drinks in the large comfortable lounge before enjoying a wonderful dinner. The food was excellent and the staff were very attentive. We had a very tasty breakfast before leaving the next morning too. Breakfast is served until 11:00am so you can enjoy a lie-in if you wish!

Room Tip: The rooms at the rear are away from the road

Overall we enjoyed staying at the George over Easte despite the hefty room charge - but it was Easter. Great location for walking in the Peaks, free car park & internet, friendly staff and excellent breakfast...however restaurant rather pricey and the portions were on the small side. When we came to leave we were presented with a bill including a 5% service charge on the entire bill. Apparently this is included in their t's and c's and I was told to complain to the manager (which I will do) - I only look for a cancellation policy/car parking/internet availability - I certainly wasn't looking for that! If I want to leave a tip I will leave a tip - voluntarily. It left a rather sour taste after what was a very nice weekend in a lovely village.
