We booked via booking.com, and the description of the room was spot on. If you want a better room, book via hotel website. This hotel is spotless, friendly, helpful, comfortable, and its syle is chic-historic, very attractive. Even in our budget room there were two comfortable chairs, much appreciated. The food is excellent - the included breakfast is amazing, and the suppers absolutely delicious. If you want a budget option, there is a reduced but still delicious early-bird menu 6.30pm-7.30pm. Complimentary water in the room is a very nice touch - and it is literally years since we had staff offer to carry our bags. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them - and gluten-free food easily to hand. Well done The George, we'll be back.

Room Tip: Have a room at the back if traffic is a problem. We slept like tops at the back.

My wife and I shared a double Superior room. Service excellent and the food outstanding. Two AA Rosettes for cuisine for many years. Also very economical packages so take a look. The 4-night offer is outstanding value

Room Tip: Overlook the rear of hotel

I visited here for a weekend, my extended family were staying in other accommodation near-by. It is a very old building in the countryside, but it has been very sensitively modernised.
The room was comfortable and the attention to detail was beautiful. The bathroom was stunning- a super big bath and amazing shower. The bed was comfortable. The room was over-warm, but that was just the weather we were having. The beds have feather pillows and duvets- for some this would be high luxury, but for me it just means allergy city! These were changed quickly and without fuss.
The breakfast was varied and plentiful.
I didn't use the restaurant because I ate with my family elsewhere, but it always looked busy.
The highest praise goes to the staff, they were all so attentive, nothing was too much trouble. The young woman at reception was a real credit to her employers, so friendly and willing to help, always there with a smile and a happy remark.
The cake I had brought with me for the party was kept safe and cool, little gestures like this are really appreciated.
A winning combination of stylish, comfortable and friendly! I hope I will be back to visit again!

Dined with a group of colleagues. Whilst the service was excellent the food didn't match. Over fussy and too complicated. Suggest they simplify the menu and get the basics right.

For example rhubarb cheesecake was rhubarb mousse roll( don't believe for one moment there was any cheese in it) and no biscuit base and served with mint sorbet. What's wrong with a genuine rhubarb cheesecake??

Won't be rushing back.

Great location, clean and stylish rooms.
Food was on the whole - very tasty, breakfast especially.
Hotel owner made the effort to talk to every guest, which was a nice touch.
Will definitely come back.

Lovely hotel, good location. Clean and comfortable.

I shared a twin room and it was very nice, though the beds were pushed next to each other, so almost a double - no room to separate them. The room was very hot though even though the heating wasn't on.

The breakfast was very good with lots of choice. Didn't have any other meals here so cannot comment on them.

This would have been a hotel that I would have recommended to others, apart from when we checked out we discovered an enforced 5% service charge on the bill. Fair enough on a bar or restaurant bill, but on a room charge. Seems a sneaky way of charging more for the room - why not just increase your room rates. Left a nasty taste on what was otherwise a lovely weekend.

Room Tip: Front rooms are on the main road and may be noisy for light sleepers - didn't cause me a problem...

I'm not one for leaving reviews but more of a reader of reviews but felt the need to leave one after reading previous comments. Me and my partner had one of the best breaks away at this hotel, from the moment we stepped foot in the building to the moment we left. I feel some people on here don't seem to understand what quality food and top service is and should stick to holiday inns and low budget hotels!

The reception is very welcoming, greeted soon as we entered by a young brown haired girl who was very friendly and quick with our arrival. The room was spacious, comfortable, clean and well equiped, sky tv would have been a bonus but not end of the world as not there to watch tv all day. When we came down for dinner we was greeted by Matthew ( who we later found out was the assistant manager) he was very friendly, helpful and really made our stay special taking his time out to talk to us with nothing being too much trouble for him. we orderd our supper in the comfy lounge area while having a couple of G&T's which we feel was a nice touch and relaxing.

The menu is well presented and Matthew was helpful with a query we had. The wine list is quite large but we stuck to just a glass as was recovering from illness. After a short wait we was taken through to the restaurant, its not the biggest but its nicely appointed with tasteful music playing. The plastic cover on the tables is not something we expected but was very clean and not something we felt the need to bother us. Homemade breads and flavoured butter was brought to the table which was gorgeous, Matthew offered a second plate full as it was that good. my salmon starter was exactly as described in the menu and was full of flavour . id love to comment on my wife's starter but she wouldn't share her scallops which was well presented. After starters we was offered a sorbet as a palate cleanser, not something we feel was needed but the thought is there. My main was rabbit pie which was to die for, it was Matthews recommendation and what a recommendation it was. I managed to steal a bit of my partners lamb which was well cooked and rich in flavour. we couldn't manage a pudding as the food is very filling instead we opted for latte's and petit fours which is served with coffee in the lounge. The coffee was the best ive seen served in a coffee glass with the layers of milk and espresso building up.the service during the meal was attentive but not intrusive and felt very well looked after.

We had a very good nights sleep with a long lay in because of the late breakfast times the George offers. Matthew was serving again that morning and was very helpful with his local knowledge after showing an interest in our plans for the day. Two bacon sandwiches with black budding bread was the perfect start to the day. Check out was efficient with every staff member taking time out to talk and say goodbye. we will most definitly be returning to the George.

Room Tip: Rooms on the front face the road, noise did not put us off but may others.
