Stayed at The George Hotel for a two night break in January, although the Building was lovely and the lounge cosy our stay wasnt.
The room we was put in smelt of paint and kept us both awake all night with the noice of the concrete trucks outside the windows the following day we both had headaches.

The complementary bottle of water provided in the room was infact tap water and to top it all when we had breakfast the bacon and sausage was roar, toast uncooked & when we informed the waiter he told us that he has already told the chef to cook the food......we was constantly asked if we wanted to book in he restaurant & then it dawned on us why the restarant was empty every night, for the price they charge they are ripping people off....do yourself a favour and dont bother, had a great meal at the Scotsman Pack down the road.

A group of us stayed at the George Hotel last weekend - I used to live in Sheffield and have known of the George for a number so of years but never stayed before. They have been taken over by Best Western but it was a pleasant surprise when I arrived as the hotel was impressive inside and out.
All of the rooms were lovely, I'd agree that the lack of bedside lamps (replaced with overhead spotlights) was not great but this was a minor issue when compared to the facilities offered and the service.
The staff were very friendly, breakfast was great and we had to split our bill 6 ways - there was no complaining. I'd recommend the George if you're in the Peaks anytime.

My husband had been here before with friends and said I would love it. I did, Our room was spacious ,modern and extremely clean. We ate in the restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The lounge area is cosy and peaceful and full of character. We will definately return!

We stayed at The George last week on a precious night away from our two small children.

The welcome we received was warm and felt very genuine, and the food was completely superb. We ate in the restaurant and had one of the best meals that we have ever eaten, and then breakfast the following morning was simply the best breakfast I have ever had. Everthing (jam, marmelade, bread, museli etc) was homemade. meats were well sourced and very tasty and the Loch Fyne kippers were superb. And they served breakfast until 11am.

The rooms were comfortable and well equipped, the lounge area downstairs was beautiful and very relaxing and checkout wan't until 12pm.

A great hotel. We highly recommend it.

We booked at The George because the place where our friends were staying didn't have any extra rooms. We didn't know what to expect and had a very nice surprise when we arrived. It seems the Best Western chain is buying up a lot of small, old fashioned places so The George was the best of both worlds: it was quite quaint and reasonably priced but had nice new bathrooms. Our room was well designed--electric outlets at the level of the table so you don't have to bend down to plug in your laptop--and had a couple of arm chairs, an ironing board and a tea kettle. My one gripe would be that instead of bed side lamps they had too-bright spot lights on the ceiling trained on the bed which was no good for my husband who wanted to sleep while I was reading. The receptionist was very nice and ended up showing us some local sights on her day off!

The hotel prides itself on its food and the restaurant gets quite full so you have to book ahead. We enjoyed sitting in the lounge area with a drink while we pored over the menu and the food was quite fine--interesting but not too fussy and with a good cheese cart.

My advice would be: book a room that us not on the main road, have some meals at the nearby Plough (which has fantastic pub food) and take some nice walks in the countryside. We will be coming back next year.

From the outside, The George Hotel looks like a cozy, country house hotel - which is exactly what it is. But visit the restaurant and you'll be impressed with (if you'll pardon the cliche) traditional food with a contemporary twist. Prices are sensible and the quality is excellent. The service was very efficient - at times slightly too efficient - but that's my only complaint. This would be a good restaurant wherever it was, but it's an outstanding find in this tiny village.
