I could not wait to write this review. There were 12 of us booked in for Sunday lunch, it was a special 70th birthday occasion and I would firstly like to praise the staff who waited on us and the lady who took out meal orders, thank you all for your patience with such a large party. a pre-bought cake was even brought out after the meal, which the staff kindly adorned with a mini-firework! Santo's is in such a stunning location, please see photographs for the views from the railings at the end of the car park. I would not hesitate in booking Santos' for a wedding/wedding reception based on the service, location and friendliness of the staff. I can't comment on the rooms as we were only there for a special birthday lunch. The members of our party travelled from Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton and nearby Swanwick. Sunday lunch menu is £13.50 per head for two courses and desserts are available for a small supplement. Most had the beef but I had spiced haddock which was gorgeous, I could have eaten two. Vegetables and roast potatoes were served by the waiting staff. As you can see from the photographs, the reception area is modern and clean and has a very very deep (wishing?) well. When walking through to the bar and dining area, it's like walking into a different century, from the 21st Century style reception area to the lounge and bar and dining room, which had oak beams and the like. I wish I lived closer to this lovely hotel.

The room I had was called Donatello no:24..Luxury.. very beautifully furnished and decorated and the ensuite too. The staff were super. they make everyone feel special..
I have no hesitation in reccomending this super...not so little, country Hotel

The food was very good too, especially the Breakfast...

I visit the hotel 2-3 times a year to attend business meetings - the staff are always happy and obliging, but the lunch that is served up to the delegates every time is pretty dire ....... last meeting we had spare ribs, but there was absolutely no meat at all on the ribs !

However, I did stay over on the last occasion ........ my single room was small, very clean and well equipped but was quite adequate, a little 1980's-ish decor.
The evening meal was taken in the restaurant and, much to my surprise, the food was very good, especially the fillet steak.
The hotel is nicely situated in a quiet road off the main Alfreton to Chesterfield drag and has magnificent views from the car park.
Yes, it's an OK place to stay for a touring weekend of the local area.

We stayed here for a minibreak over August Bank Holiday weekend. On the Saturday night there was a wedding which took over the whole hotel, but the Sunday was much quieter. Staff are friendly and the hotel is clean. Our towel rail in the bathroom was broken, and each day this was just poked back in to the hole by the people making the room up, rather than being repaired. The rooms are also really hot at night.
Breakfast is a buffet and very busy with less attention to detail the morning after a wedding. On mornings when there has not been a wedding, however, breakfast is waiter/waitress served and much nicer.
We had a bar snack on the Sunday night, as the restaurant is not open on Sundays. The food was very nice although the menu choice is small and there is only one vegetarian option.
I would happily stay here again.

Stayed here recently after my friends wedding of which I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid, The venue was in a good location close to local towns, the viewing terrace was stunning and the well in reception was a great focal point. The staff were very accommodating the night before the wedding when we arrived to leave some decorations, however on the day some staff seemed quite tense. We stayed in an Italian themed room which had a great carved bed and matching wardrobe, the bathroom was large and the room overall very comfortable and a reasonable size, we were located above the courtyard, with no noise disruption as the courtyard has a moveable roof so can be open air or shut. So once shut can hear no noise. Breakfast the next morning was well laid out and good choice except for the lack of beans or tomatoes, so unfortunately seemed a little dry without any. Although we were charged their "wedding guest rate" after speaking to other guests it seemed this still varied. Overall though a great place to stay.

We stayed here on 21/07/2012 as guests at a wedding and can say we were very impressed with the facilities and level of service. The hotel itself it situated in Higham which is a small village close to Alfreton and about 10 minutes drive from the M1 J28. It overlooks the Amber valley from a raised terrace which is absolutely ideal for post wedding shots and a great place just to sit and enjoy the view.

The food served during the wedding breakfast was of high quality with large portions, a struggle to finish it all and this was complemented by excellent service from the staff. In the evening they laid on a fantastic barbecue with hog roast, burgers and chicken with all the trimmings, baked potatoes, salad etc, possibly the best hog roast i've had to be honest.

We stayed in the "Arabian Room" (Room 11) and it was well decorated and clean with a large fan and air conditioning unit and although we couldn't find the control for the aircon the fan was more than enough to keep the room cool. The room was situated right above the wedding disco so do bear this in mind if you intend to stay in this room during a wedding as you could definitely hear the music/DJ below.

Breakfast the following morning was typical buffet style and had the usual array of breakfast items with the one exception of beans! Beans are clearly the food of kings and should be present at every full English breakfast table! The sausages were of excellent quality though, so I'm not dropping any marks for that.

I suppose the question would be whether I would use this establishment for my wedding breakfast/reception and the answer would be a resounding yes.

To summarise then;

Pros
-----
Lovely village location
Great views
Excellent service
Clean and up to date accommodation
Reasonable rates for the rooms (ours was £110 for superior double + breakfast with the wedding guest discount)
High quality food with excellent presentation
Good disco room for wedding parties

Cons
------
No beans at breakfast :-(

Room Tip: If you are staying here for non wedding purposes ask for a room away from the main disco area.

My daughter was recently married here, and the hotel was excellent. The location is wonderful, set in the middle of a quaint village of old stone built houses, with excellent views across the Amber Valley into central Derbyshire.

The quality of the food served at the wedding reception was very good, was well presented, and the portions were more generous than we expected. The barbecue was good with some fine roast pork, burgers and jacket potatoes, although the salads were a little bland. The breakfast buffet had plenty of cold choices, and there was the normal range of hot English breakfast options. The food was tasty, and there was plenty, but sometimes the "top-up" of the food station was a little slow due to the small numbers of staff serving.

As well as the use of the public rooms, we also took a dozen bedrooms and they were comfortable, clean and a decent size. Most have different themes (sailing, cricket, oriental, etc), so the "sameness" you get in many chain hotels definitely did not apply here. We had the Chairmans Room which has a separate bedroom and a large living area, and although expensive I can recommend it.

For us, a key theme running through the period of the wedding was the attitude and helpfulness of the staff. The dealings with the staff included early morning, day time through to late night, and at all times the staff were invariably friendly, obliging and willing to make the effort to make our stay a pleasurable one.

The drinks were perhaps a little expensive, but that was the only real down-side, and I would definitely recommend this hotel as a wedding venue, but also as a nice place to stay or have a meal.

Room Tip: Make sure you select a themed room as some of the unthemed bedrooms had unusual combinations of colo...
