Old Shoulder of Mutton
Ranked #1 of 4 Winster B&B and Inns
Reviewed 12 March 2014

Well what can I say? This is a hidden gem which I almost want to keep a secret. My Wife and I enjoyed Steve and Julie's hospitality as though we were long lost friends, the accommodation is superb and spotless, to rival any top class country hotel throughout this fair isle of ours, who could learn a thing or two about the attention to detail which you find at The Old Shoulder Of Mutton.
Nothing is too much trouble and Steve & Julies passion to make you feel welcome is evident as soon as you walk in.
The location is superb, and the Village Pub, The Old Bowling Green, run by Dave & Marilyn is brilliant, with a host of local ales and great simple British grub done brilliantly.
Steve also runs a vintage car adventure tour business which is amazing and there are so many country activities locally that you are spoilt for choice.
The Old Shoulder Of Mutton does not allow children and hosts couples or singles only, which was absolutely perfect for us as a couple whose offspring have flown the nest leaving us to enjoy a little peace and quiet from time to time.
My only criticism is that we can't keep this wonderful guesthouse a secret from you all.
Go and stay, and tell them Christian and Jane sent you!!

Thanks Christian and Jane for your great review. Also pleased to hear that you enjoyed your evenings in the Old Bowling Green. It really is a great pub and David is serving great traditional food - he prepares and cooks it all on the premises. It's also good to see that you submitted an excellent review for them too. We don't have a family room and we're just not set up for young children. Your sentiment is shared by many who, love them as we do, enjoy getting away and having a grown up break. I promise we won't tell too many people if you don't ;~)

We visited the Old Shoulder of Mutton in September, having chosen it based on the reviews here in Trip Advisor. We weren't disappointed.

The breakfasts were amazing - large portions of wonderful food. From fresh fruit salad, yoghurt and granola, to the fully cooked english breakfast. You need to do a lot of walking in the wonderful local countryside to work off all of that food!

The room was very comfortable, having a lovely large bed and was very nicely decorated. The bathroom was a good size too, although you might need to watch your head as you go through the door. It didn't bother me, but my husband is somewhat taller.

Steve and Julie also provided loads of really useful information about the local area, and could recommend routes for walking, driving or cycling depending on what you wanted to do. Their recommendations of restaurants were all excellent too.

Due to the location of the Old Shoulder of Mutton, there is only one off-road parking space, but on street parking was unrestricted and close by. Winster itself is a quiet and pretty but small village, and a short drive to Bakewell, Matlock and other tourist attractions.

Thank you for taking time out to write a review for us - and everybody else to read! We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay on your way up to the Lake District. As you say, the parking in Winster is unrestricted but we can usually accommodate three cars immediately in front of the house. Winster wasn't built for cars so they are an uncomfortable fit but we get by ok. We do have so many fabulous things to do in the immediate area - Chatsworth, Haddon, Tissington, Lathkil, Dovedale, Manifold Valley, Bakewell, Monsal Head.............. just too many to list.

The nicest B&B I've ever stayed in - I can't recommend it highly enough! Steven and Julie were lovely, welcoming hosts and their house is gorgeous. Our bedroom was lovely and luxurious, with the most comfortable bed, and the breakfast was delicious. We had such a relaxing weekend there. Winster is a beautiful village, perfect for exploring the Peak District.

This was our second visit to the Shoulder of Mutton in the lovely village of Winster. We had different room this time but it was just as beautiful, characterful and luxurious as the last one. Steve and Julie really looked after us, the breakfasts were first class, we haven't had better anywhere! Steve gave us a walking route around Winster and Birchover which was excellent, we hope to go over for the day to do that one again soon. We also used one of Steve's driving routes around the area which was great. I would recommend this place to anyone, we had another great weekend and will most definitely going back at our next opportunity.

We had a weekend break here with friends - the property is conveniently located for Chatsworth House which we visited during our stay. The Old Shoulder of Mutton is a former pub in the pretty village of Winster which provides options for dining within easy walking distance. The B&B is decorated to a very high standard - bedrooms are very comfortable and bathrooms have state-of-the-art fittings. There is a lounge for guests which includes a fridge with a supply of fresh milk. Breakfasts are excellent - fresh fruit salad was served one morning in half a pineapple; the cooked items on offer included delicious bacon and Derbyshire oatcake.

Above all is the friendly welcome from from hosts Steven and Julie - tea and home-made cake on arrival, helpful advice on places to visit and eat. They have some imaginative plans for future activities for guests which will surely add value to what is already an excellent B&B. We will definitely return.

Steven and Julie were the perfect hosts.
We were greeted with afternoon tea and cake.
The b&b has been restored to such a high standard that we did not want to leave even after 4 days of walking in the Peaks.
We hope to return again soon for another lovely luxurious break away from it all .
