This B&B is just lovely - fab décor, spacious & stylish rooms, and lots of fab finishing touches such as homemade cake & coffee on arrival. If you are looking for a high calibre B&B with a warm welcome that goes above and beyond expectations then this is the place for you. Julie and Steven are excellent hosts and will endeavour to make your stay a perfect one.

Room Tip: Our room had the big bath which was fantastic - big enough to share!!

We chose the Old Shoulder of Mutton based on its #1 ranking. We were welcomed to our room with a pot of tea and a slice of cake by Steve. Breakfast was a dream - we had the full work seated at a communal table with the other guests. Steve provided us with a map and directions for a great 20K hike around the area including a liquid lunch in a nearby village pub. All in all a great couple of days when we never touched our car.

Thank you Martin for taking time out to write a review of your stay at the Old Shoulder of Mutton. That was one heck of a long walk you did, but the variety is amazing. Fabulous views, pre-historic stone circle, two small villages (with pubs), dales, rivers, massive stone outcrops and even some good weather! Great to meet you both and we hope that you get the chance to do it all again.

We are regular visitors to this part of Derbyshire, we love everything about it, it's easily accessible from all parts of the country but still unspoilt.

We chose this accommodation because of the amazing reviews and we weren't disappointed.
The room was immaculate, with hand made furniture and top quality refreshments and luxurious bathroom with quality towels, robes and toiletries.

Steve and Julie have renovated this former pub to the highest standards, retaining and restoring lots of original features. We loved the curved walls, latch doors and the massive inglenook with woodburner in the dining room.

We were welcomed with coffee and cake and Steve and Julie were the perfect hosts, friendly, helpful and informative without being intrusive.

Breakfast was wonderful with excellent quality food cooked to your requirements. Fresh juice, fresh fruit, yoghurt, choice of cereals and cooked breakfast. When booking I had asked if they could purchase me some lactose free milk, they were thoughtful enough to get me the lactose free yoghurt as well.

Steve booked a table for us at the local, the Bowling Green, it had a real country pub atmosphere with excellent locally produced food and well kept quality cask ales.

All in all a perfect weekend. Doubt our word? Try it yourself you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: We stayed in the end room with the super kingsize bed, it was very comfortable.

We're so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you appreciated the quality of the refurbishment. We're proud of it. We are very aware that different people want different things from their stay. It's all about you - not us - so we try hard to accommodate special dietary needs - just let us know. We hope you get chance to return - you're not far away.

This place really is fantastic. Steven and Julie were incredible hosts. The whole place was immaculate. They had plenty of info available for things to do in the area of which there is no shortage. For breakfast there is one large table which is great as you can meet the other guests and creates a lovely sociable atmosphere. It's a wonderful breakfast with lots of variety and is plentiful.

Being a younger couple from a large town it was a fantastic retreat to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. Steven and Julie were so welcoming and helped make our first trip to the Peak District a fantastic one.

If you're planning a stay in the Peak District this is THE place to go. We will most definitely return.

Thank you David for your great review. Village life is very different to living in a large town, and Winster always gives a warm welcome to everybody. It is also very pleasing for us to hear that you appreciated the breathtaking scenery. This is a beautiful place to be with a huge variety of things to see and do. We look forward to your return.

Well what can I say? This is a hidden gem which I almost want to keep a secret. My Wife and I enjoyed Steve and Julie's hospitality as though we were long lost friends, the accommodation is superb and spotless, to rival any top class country hotel throughout this fair isle of ours, who could learn a thing or two about the attention to detail which you find at The Old Shoulder Of Mutton.
Nothing is too much trouble and Steve & Julies passion to make you feel welcome is evident as soon as you walk in.
The location is superb, and the Village Pub, The Old Bowling Green, run by Dave & Marilyn is brilliant, with a host of local ales and great simple British grub done brilliantly.
Steve also runs a vintage car adventure tour business which is amazing and there are so many country activities locally that you are spoilt for choice.
The Old Shoulder Of Mutton does not allow children and hosts couples or singles only, which was absolutely perfect for us as a couple whose offspring have flown the nest leaving us to enjoy a little peace and quiet from time to time.
My only criticism is that we can't keep this wonderful guesthouse a secret from you all.
Go and stay, and tell them Christian and Jane sent you!!

Thanks Christian and Jane for your great review. Also pleased to hear that you enjoyed your evenings in the Old Bowling Green. It really is a great pub and David is serving great traditional food - he prepares and cooks it all on the premises. It's also good to see that you submitted an excellent review for them too. We don't have a family room and we're just not set up for young children. Your sentiment is shared by many who, love them as we do, enjoy getting away and having a grown up break. I promise we won't tell too many people if you don't ;~)

We visited the Old Shoulder of Mutton in September, having chosen it based on the reviews here in Trip Advisor. We weren't disappointed.

The breakfasts were amazing - large portions of wonderful food. From fresh fruit salad, yoghurt and granola, to the fully cooked english breakfast. You need to do a lot of walking in the wonderful local countryside to work off all of that food!

The room was very comfortable, having a lovely large bed and was very nicely decorated. The bathroom was a good size too, although you might need to watch your head as you go through the door. It didn't bother me, but my husband is somewhat taller.

Steve and Julie also provided loads of really useful information about the local area, and could recommend routes for walking, driving or cycling depending on what you wanted to do. Their recommendations of restaurants were all excellent too.

Due to the location of the Old Shoulder of Mutton, there is only one off-road parking space, but on street parking was unrestricted and close by. Winster itself is a quiet and pretty but small village, and a short drive to Bakewell, Matlock and other tourist attractions.

Thank you for taking time out to write a review for us - and everybody else to read! We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay on your way up to the Lake District. As you say, the parking in Winster is unrestricted but we can usually accommodate three cars immediately in front of the house. Winster wasn't built for cars so they are an uncomfortable fit but we get by ok. We do have so many fabulous things to do in the immediate area - Chatsworth, Haddon, Tissington, Lathkil, Dovedale, Manifold Valley, Bakewell, Monsal Head.............. just too many to list.
