“This prison is worth a visit!”
Reviewed 27 April 2011

Steeped in history, this former 'Lock-up' has been renovated into a luxury B&B.
From choccies and fancy biccies in the room, to the glass of wine in the 'double airbath' it's a real little treasure.
The breakfast was amazing and whilst not full buffet, the cereal, fruit and yogurts were a plenty. As for full english - well, it's a good job they have over sized plates as there was so much food even I struggled!
The town is a few minutes walk with a couple of cute pubs (hidden in the wall) and a fab Pizza place open on evenings (make sure you get them to book you in).
Plenty of lovely countryside to walk of your brekki too - and you don't even have to get in your car!
Perfect way to relax and be pampered - wonderfull hosts ;-)

Room Tip: Hideen treasure away from the hustle of Matlock!

We stayed just for one night in the Chapel, just apart from the main house which is a museum in itself. We had a wonderful welcome which included a complimentary glass of wine on arrival (I'm easily won over!) and shown around and given tips of where to go in Wirksworth.

The room was perfect, in a converted Chapel with it's own path to the road, although it was a little cold (as was the weather) we were encouraged to use the portable heaters and it soon warmed up. The only faults I can think of were the poor television signal and only 4 channels, but that's not such a problem - who wants to watch telly anyway? There was a selection of DVDs and videos if you really feel the need. Oh, and no flushing tea bags down the toilet. I'm not sure why people must feel the need to flush them down, but it must happen!

Breakfast was also great, a choice of exactly what you want (or don't) the evening before with options of fish if full English isn't for you.

A really wonderful weekend overall and worth going back as a special treat, for it is on the expensive side.

Wonderful hosts, terrific town, beautiful area. If you can, stay in the former Chapel; your neighbours will be very quiet! Tony & Vivienne were the perfect hosts/tour guides & food critics. Their recommendation of Le Mistral was much appreciated! Plenty of watering holes in the town, The Royal Oak being the most convivial. The breakfasts were also excellent; I can fully recommend the pancakes. What did we like least about our stay? That we couldn't stay longer, of course!

My Husband and i have stayed in a lot off Hotels over the years but not in b&b and we will definately be returning to " The Old Lock Up " We were made to feel very welcome and could not fault our stay in any way pure luxury , We stayed in the solicitors bedroom it was beautiful very cosy and the bed was so comfortable with fresh white sheets and duvet , With its 3 ft thick walls you do not hear a thing its very quiet and tranquil , The whole place was very clean and fresh , Breakfast was amazing and you were spoilt for choice , full English , freshly cooked pancakes , cereals , Home made Breads lovely , and fish too . Next time we would like to stay longer as we didnt want to come home it was a real treat from start to finish ! Tony was a super host unfortunately we didnt get to meet his wife Vivian as she was away during our stay . The b&b has alot off its original features we found the history off it really interesting . It really does deserve to be a Gold five star accomodation .

From the moment we arrived and were greeted by our host we knew we had found a very special guest house offering an amazing experience to its all guests. The guest house and it grounds offers you the opportunity to be transported back to a very different era whilst receiving some extra special pampering from the hosts.

We stayed in the Magistrates room which is tastefully decorated and well equipted with all the creature comforts including nice touches like your own box of chocolates and well stocked tea and coffee making facilities complete with fresh milk and some fabulous homemade biscuits (chocolate short breads are highly recommended).

The breakfast is one of the best we have both enjoyed and you can choose from a selection of full english options to light choices or even the crepes which are fantastic.

One of our highlights was the air bath for two with chilled glass of wine, heaven!

We've already booked for our anniversary next year.
