“excellent cosy cottage in lovely village”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

We stayed in this cottage 8th June 2013 for 1 week, we also had 1 boxer dog with us, the cottage is very well furnished and equiped with everything you can need, it was very clean had a lovely garden and overall an excellent stay , the only slightly negative is the cottage is on a very steep bank for anyone with mobility issues. The village is also very nice has a few pubs, we tended to favour 'The Blacks Head the landlady and locals very friendly, and we were allowed to take the dog in with us and made to feel very welcome. There are several takeaways and an very good frenchrestaurant in the village (very reasonable price) there are a lot of places to visit in the area Chatsworth House, Carsington Water to name a couple we enjoyed every day we were there, i have noticed the comments about the front door, agree it needs looking at but this didnt change our opinion of the cottage . Thanks

Management Response
29 Jun 2013
Thanks for your feedback; We work hard to keep Matchbox in top condition, whilst still keeping the 'old-cottage' charm.

The front door...as you can imagine, we and the local planners are reluctant for anything other than a period wooden front door to be fitted, and we've got a craftsman carpenter making a replacement front door for us. This should be done within a few weeks but in the meantime, please accept our apologies for it not looking as nice as it should.

Curtains are new; being hemmed asap.

The dining table and chairs are old, period items and as a result of your feedback we'll get the seat pads refurbished.

Matchbox Cottage is the perfect getaway...Everything that you could possibly want from a romantic break in the Peak District. Cosy log burner, immaculately clean and beautifully decorated. We love Wirksworth, lots to do and see in and around the village - Carsington Water being a favourite of ours as well as shopping in Near by Ashbourne. The High Peak Trail is minutes away and links to lots of cycle routes and walks. We will definitely be recommending this cottage and Wirksworth to our friends and family.

Liked best: Friendly service - nothing was too much trouble.
Liked least: The weather! Still plenty to do, but we would like to visit in September for the Wirksworth Festival next time.

“Pure fairytale!”

This is a 'chocolate box' cottage in the wonderful village of Wirksworth in the Peak District and a real gem of a place to stay. The cottage is wonderfully quaint, beautifully furnished and decorated and so comfortable, you may not want to leave once you get the wood-burner going!

The kitchen has everything you need to prepare hearty home cooked meals, using fresh local ingredients from the village shops (highly recommend Steve's Butchers). The garden with railway sleeper decking has amazing views over the rolling hills the area is famous for and a great place to chill out with all day sunshine. The dining room and living room are really gorgeous and very comfortable. A great delight was the bathroom with a huge cast iron roll-top bath, ideal for relaxing with some candles and a glass of wine and good book. The double bedroom is idyllic with very comfy bed and superior bed linen. The second bedroom is great for one of two guests with 2 single beds.

I cannot think of anything that the owners could add to make your stay more comfortable or enchanting. The day trip opportunities are super, with nearby Matlock, Ashbourne, Bakewell and Chatsworth House. I would also recommend a trip to the National Stone Museum, Abraham's Heights and also the Carsington Water resevoir.

A five minute walk down the hill into Wirkswoth takes you to a number of great traditional pubs, local specialist shops, a handful of super restaurants (recommend the French Bistro and Deli) and Indian, Chinese and Fish and Chip takeaways. This village has everything you could wish for and is a photographer's delight.

We loved our stay and will be returning very soon :-)
