Everything you need for a quiet getaway. Far enough but not too far out of wirksworth . Good local shops, pubs and places to eat nearby (especially french restaurant - Mistral) Within easy journey from local attractions and good for walking
One suggestion - coat stand inside door so if do get wet coats do not trail through property
Owner really welcoming,friendly and helpful
Overlooking the lovely town of Wirksworth, with a beautiful view across the valley. Hollywell Lodge is furnished in a country style with all the modern conveniences. Equipped with all you would need for a stay and spotlessly clean. We loved the Queen sized bed and the good size of the shower. The owners are very dog friendly, we felt comfortable staying with our dog .The location is great for a morning/evening dog walk (torch at night) the paddock was perfect for ball games. The walk into town was about 20mins downhill, walking back up could more of a challenge! Wirksworth is lovely. A good selection of eateries and pubs. All local businesses NO CHAINS hurrah (except the Co op at the petrol station). It was a perfect stay for us and we would not hesitate to return.
This is a great base for anyone considering a walking break in the southern Derbyshire Peak District. The property is an annexe to the owner's own cottage, so it is nice to know that someone is near if there are any problems. That said, you will have complete privacy during your stay.
The reception is very friendly and Robert (the owner) gives you a useful tour and helpfully explains the appliances and the fact that you may need to wait a minute or so for hot water / central heating, as it comes from a boiler in the main cottage. That just adds to the quaintness of the place.
Accommodation-wise there are 4 rooms; a lounge/kitchen, a shower/toilet, a master bedroom and a second bedroom - which connects all the other three rooms. One thing to bear in mind is that the second bedroom is a bit of a corridor and you have to walk through it from all of the other rooms to get to the loo.
The property is in good order and split over 3 levels (only 3-4 steps between levels). Remember, it is old, so there won't be double glazing or modern levels of insulation. Consequently you do get some condensation and a slight mustiness (even in July). The owner has helpfully provided a de-humidifier but we never felt the need to use it.
You will be quite remote here. The nearest town is Wirksworth, around mile away (and it's all uphill coming back!) There are several restaurants/pubs there and it is a good place to stock up on the day to day provisions. Matock and Belper are nearby which have a wider range of shops and Derby is only a 20 minute drive if you forget something really serious!
Nearby, a local pub, The Malt Shovel (dog friendly), is a useful refreshment hole after a day's walking. However, it was undergoing a refurbishment while we stayed, with no food and limited opening hours. Hopefuly it will be back up and fully running soon. Don't forget to pack a torch for the walk back!
There is plenty of good walking in the area and the owner has supplied a very good shelf of books to help those not familiar with the area. Within 4-5 miles you can get to some cracking views of the Derbyshire Dales. Nearby, take a look at Alport Heights, Middleton Top, Black Rocks. There are a couple of circularwalking tours around Wirksworth which are also well worth the effort. See the aforementioned bookshelf for full details!
You also have the use of a 3/4 acre paddock, so you can give the dogs a useful walk on bad weather days without having to leave the property.
Overall an excellent quiet retreat for a week's exploring the southern Peak District.
A wonderful peaceful location, perfect for our weekend away, close to charming village and other fine local attractions, many thanks
Cottage overlooks valley, a little walk up the lane and you get a beautiful view of Wirksworth, especially light up at night. Got your own personal meadow padock, very quiet and private, perfect distance from the madding crowd but just close enough to get to the town centre. Nice walks, all amenities. Owner very receptive to suggestions and feedback. Only comment, if you don't mind the second bedroom being a walk through and having the main toilet off it, then you'll be fine. The main bedroom is lovely.
We spent a lovely weekend in the cottage, which with a little paddock outside was perfect for our dog to run around safely. Just 20 minutes walk from the town, the cottage was ideally situated. Thoroughly recommended.
