“Ideal for our family”
Reviewed 15 August 2014 via mobile

We were a family of mum, dad, 2 sons, a daughter-in-law and 4 granddaughters needing a crash pad before/after a family wedding nearby.
We called in previously on a Sunday to book the rooms and the place was buzzing and the food looked good. So we decided to get there early on the wedding day and have a nice lunch before getting ready. What we hadn't realised was that the pub is not open until 5pm on weekdays :-( . Luckily Sue met us on the car park and let us into our rooms early. The rooms are pleasant and clean. We then had a little trip into Bakewell for lunch and returned to get ourselves ready for the wedding so didn't see Sue again until the next morning.
We could choose the time we wanted breakfast which was helpful and breakfast was lovely. All 5 adults had the full English and not a lot was left, the bacon and sausages especially were good, also really enjoyed the cafetiere of coffee, lovely. Sue panicked a little when 9 of us arrived for breakfast at the same time as she was on her own but she coped very well. Thanks Sue, hope to call again and have a meal there sometime.

We have just spent 4 days at The Farmyard Inn staying in the 'COW SHED'.

It's not the Ritz, it's not fancy and yes it has a couple of things that need doing, like the noisy extractor in the ensuite, and maybe a fresh coat of paint.....but by golly we had a great stay.

We ate here 2 nights out of the 4 and honestly wish we had eaten here every night, but we wanted to try other places in Bakewell. As said by other trip advisors, eat early or be prepared to wait, especially at weekends as this place is popular. Like most eateries, the public do tend to arrive enmasse at the same time, but we ate early and had no delays. The food was good, hot, well presented and plenty of it.

Breakfast was superb, and SUE who is the 'BOSS' goes out of her way to ensure you are well catered for, she comes over as a little ditzy, but this lady works damned hard to make everything happen, and you can't help but like and admire her for the huge effort to keep the wheels turning. She is assisted by pleasant staff and whilst we were there she had her partner Steve to help out, a great team indeed..

The Inn is in a small village, it has great character and is well situated for visiting the surrounding area. We spent time in Sheffield, Chesterfield, Matlock, Buxton, Ashbourne and of course Bakewell. We also had a look round Chatsworth House & Gardens.

In Bakewell itself we ate at The Pointing Dog & Duck, which was lovely. Avoid The Wheatsheaf which is a dump, we were not impressed with The Peacock and The Red Lion was passable, but only just.

We have stayed at many B&Bs and mostly they are samey, but once in a while you get one that you remember because it's a bit different and it is different from the others for good reasons, The Farmyard Inn will stick in our minds for good reasons and we will return.

A huge thanks to SUE (and Steve) and staff......

Room Tip: There are 4 well appointed rooms adjacent to the car park but we were not bothered by any noise

Check in is not until 5 pm. as there is no one on the premises until then, unless you make other arrangements.
The 4 rooms are at the back of the pub, alongside the car park.We had the cowshed and it was okay. The only mirror was a tiny one propped up at the back of the drawer unit, the small bathroom was very dark and the fan that came on with the light was very noisy
The owner Sue and her staff were all nice
We booked a table for 7pm, it was very busy and chaotic and the meal was very late arriving, about 8.30 pm,The food was good and a good choice of beers available.
Breakfast was served and cooked by Sue, so if too many people turn up at once, it can take a while.
The location was great if you want to visit Chatsworth House, which we did and for Bakewell.

We wanted a pub B&B for two nights so that we could take our grand daughter to Gullivers Kingdom in Matlock Bath.
We chose the Farmyard Inn as the write up gave us everything we wanted.
The landlady although worked off her feet was friendly when we arrived and showed us to our room.We were staying in the Stable. All rooms are named after animal sleep areas,Pig Sty,Cow Shed,Sheep Pen and Stable.
I had already prebooked a table which was a good thing as they were rammed.
Food was excellent, service was a tad slow but as I have pointed out they were rammed and as we had all the time in the world it did not matter.
Room was fine, had all the essentials and we had good nights sleep on both nights.
Breakfasts were really good with all the usual things from fruit juice to the toast.
Grand daughter loved it as so did we.
The weather was perfect although it did rain on Saturday night but we were inside so did not matter.
Staff were very attentive when they were not busy.all in all it was a lovely week end.
Thank the Manchester lass for this.

Room Tip: Stable room was for three I think all the otheres were for two people.

Stayed in Youlgreave for a week. Had already booked a couple of meals at this great venue but ended up there every night. Food was home cooked and cant find fault with menu or service. Very friendly staff and always had a laugh. As you would expect in this area very dog friendly. Shame it's not nearer to where we live! Probably advisable to book a table in advance as it is very busy.

found this place when playing cricket against Youlgreave and thought it was such a nice place booked in for a night a few weeks later. After visting the nearby Chatsworth House, we live in Sheffield and had never been around the house, which is an eye opener, so many pictures and sculptures.
The bar is busy, but well stocked. We chose to eat there at night and booked a place in the snug. We had the fish and chips with peas and the sea bass with seasonal veg. Both were excellent.
In the morning we went for breakfast cooked by the lovely Sue. How she does it is amazing. The full English set both of us up for the day. After doing a small walk (around 6miles) timed it just right to see the carnival and get a refreshing drink.
The room (cow shed) we stayed in had everything we needed.
We will return Sue.

Great welcome from the landlady and staff at this small but delightful Inn in the Peak District close to Bakewell. Well worth the extra drive to get to. Good range of beers and drinks and very good food. The beef and ale pie was excellent. Sunday car very looked very good and booking is recommended. Get there if you can. Look like it closes mid afternoon midweek.
