“Don't stay if allergic to dust!”
Reviewed 5 August 2014 via mobile

My hubby & I were travelling to a family BBQ in Raunds, so booked 2 nights so 'no drinking & driving'
We arrived very late in the evening & were greeted politely & went to our twin room (no. 17) on the ground floor.
Adequate size but very drab & 'retro 70's/80's decoration' Nothing like the promotional pictures on their website.
At night with the lights on, it showed the room had not been de-cobwebbed in the corners since then too! A thick layer of dust along the top of the headboards, bedside tables & bedside lights, but it was 10.45pm & we just needed to get our heads down.
Unfortunately in the morning I noticed the dust on the tea/coffee shelf was just as thick & when opening the windows (which weren't dbl glazed & street level) they were covered in cobwebs too under the nets.
The bathroom was clean & there was a new toilet brush holder, but the shelf it stood on had black rings of grime on it.
When housekeeping knocked, my husband pointed out the faults, but asked if they could come back later after we had left for the party at 1pm.
We returned again after 11pm expecting to find these rectified -they hadn't even been in!
As far as the staff were concerned they were all polite & friendly.
The breakfast was good value included in the room price of £60 per night. Cereals, juice, tea, coffee, toast/preserves and a full English. No complaints there!
But sack or retrain the housekeeping staff please!
(All fire alarms in the hallway were thick with dust too!)

We had a post Christmas group meal at the Columbia Hotel Restaurant on Saturday 18th January 2014. 46 persons were at the meal. The meal was very good. We had a nice vegetable soup starter, served with warm bread rolls, followed by a turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The portions were very good; the meat portion especially was quite large. The vegetables were plentiful and generally cooked well. For dessert we had profiteroles and again served in large portions. The three course meals including tea or coffee were £17.50 each. We bought a bottle of “House” Wine at £12.95. The overall cost of the meal and drinks was very reasonable. The service was very good, considering they were catering for 46 persons and although we were the last table to be served, we did not have to wait long and our plates were warm and the food was hot. The serving staff were very friendly and efficient. The owner of the hotel, Pauline, was very friendly and helpful and made sure that we all had a good time, checking that the food was served as quickly as possible and providing Christmas Crackers for each person. When the meal was finished we had a sing song and Pauline made no attempt to hurry us out. The only slight criticism we had was that the service at the bar was quite slow. Overall we enjoyed the meal and would return again.

A party of 14 of us went for a Christmas dinner at the hotel and had a lovely time. We had our own beautifully decorated room and one large table. The food was wonderful, the staff very helpful and it was a lovely evening. This is the second year running we have been and will be returning. At the end of the evening the staff came and had a drink with us and thanked us for returning which we all thought was a lovely touch.

No heating, really smells of mould throughout the hotel and in the rooms. There is cast iron stair leading to the rooms. Windows look like they have never been cleaned. breakfast moldy bread so dread to know what I have eaten. When owner told she couldnt care less. Locals laughed when we told them where we were staying as known to be a local drug hotel. Deffinately one for environment health.

Like the previous review before mine I booked this hotel as I was down there for the F1. The hotel was in a very rough part of town, but we still held out some hope for the hotel. It seemed very dated and if I'm being honest is definitely not worth the money we paid. It was a small room. The mirrors were situated badly and struggled to see anything. The rooms were so incredibly uncomfortable with the heat but I wouldn't expect air con in such a basic hotel. I cannot make a judgment on breakfast as I didn't eat but the other people I travelled with enjoyed it.

We stayed here from the Friday to the Monday, when we arrived back to the hotel on Saturday evening we had the owner question us as to how many nights we were staying. They said we were only booked in for one night but we had booked and had proof of 3 nights. There seems to be a lot of similar reviews.

If I'm being perfectly honest I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone even if you are travelling on a budget.

Let me say that we weren't expecting much from this hotel as it was a cheap option for a room during the F1

The owner Pauline is a nice lady and seems to do everything in the hotel, the breakfast was really nice too but those are about the only positives i'm afraid

Decor is very dated with peeling wallpaper, kettles and bathroom fittings from the 80s and stained carpets. Having said that the room was cosy when you closed your eyes

All this could be overlooked if it wasn't in such a rough area, one morning over breakfast i heard some local construction workers laughing and joking about "i wonder who had their windows smashed in this time", later that day i went outside to see a car with a patched up window and broken glass all over the pavement, the next day 2 of the hub caps were stolen from our car - hilarious!

Whatever you do do not bring your car (let alone a nice one) to this hotel as the neighborhood is just not safe, i actually left feeling grateful it was only hubcaps (easy to replace) rather than far worse damage

We stayed here for 1 night in March a party of 9 and although the decor is dated it is a clean and extremely warm hotel - I have never stayed in a warmer place - Pauline the manager is very friendly and helpful - we were going to walk into town to eat but the rain was that bad we ended up ordereing a chinese, Pauline was happy to supply the plates and cutlery and when we were ready for setting off giving us directions and the local taxi no - Breakfast was also one of the best - hot - good quality - plentiful - lots of variety - I think for a short stay the Columbia can not be knocked - all our party was in agreement in this
