I often ask myself after staying at hotel and writing a review “what makes a good hotel?” and I have come to the conclusion it is like baking a great cake, it’s the quality of ingredients, how its baked and presented that makes it into that final tasty masterpiece
The old Tolegate is like a great cake, you have the building itself which is built around an old medieval Tolegate these are still visible inside, this ambles gently from the old part of the hotel into the new, very tastefully done and makes for a building with great character and a superb theme for a hotel.
Then there is the location, In the middle of a quaint Sussex village so quintessentially English, with a castle, river and beautiful period buildings just yards away.
The rooms are furnished to a very high standard heavy drapes, soft plush carpets, rust and mustard decor. Our room had a very powerful shower in it which left you with that tingling clean feeling.
The food every morning and night was to die for and at the end of the week I had put on pounds but when you’re on holiday you make the most of someone else’s cooking.
But the main ingredient in this Hotel that binds everything together like the water in a cake mix is the staff, they were always friendly, caring and attentive, absolutely nothing in the week in which we stayed was too much trouble, from the chefs to the waiters and waitresses, housekeeping and bar staff.
This is the second time we have stayed here and it certainly will not be the last
Well done Maggie (General Manager) you bake an exceedingly good cake.

We stayed here for my boyfriends birthday at the beginning of may. Beautiful hotel, stayed in the four poster Jacuzzi room which was lovely (: we didn't eat at the hotel, instead went down the road to a local restaurant as we didn't fancy a carvery. We did have breakfast there which was the only thing that let the hotel down. Having stayed at best westerns before the breakfast here certainly wasn't up to the same standards as the others. Overall though a lovely visit and will definitely return.

This is lovely quiet hotel with plenty of parking. The staff were helpful and friendly. The room was upstairs at the front of the hotel and was quite large and very quiet. If you didn’t want to eat in the Carvery restaurant, there are a number of other places to eat within walking distance. Across the road is the Bramber Castle ruins which you can wander around. Good base to use for exploring the surrounding areas. We also indulged in a sumptuous afternoon tea (scones, jam and cream) in the hotel lounge – very delicious.
Would stay again.

The hotel is made up of two separate wings, Eastgate and Westgate, and divided by a driveway leading to the car park which also featured charging points for electric vehicles. Arrived to a friendly welcome, and was directed to our room (204) in Westgate. It was a fairly large room situated on the first floor, and was clean and tidy with lots of storage space, but fairly dark because of its close proximity to trees and shrubs. There was a complimentary refreshment tray with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, and bottled water, all of which were replenished daily. The bathroom had a bath with overhead shower, and unusually for a British hotel, even had a bidet. The hotel is set in a quiet location directly opposite from the ruins of Bramber Castle, and St.Nicholas Church which is purportedly the oldest Norman church in Sussex. Excellent breakfast with plenty of choices, both hot and cold. Throughout our five night stay we found the staff to be friendly and attentive.
The only negative’s were that the bed was somewhat creaky, and the handles in the bath were showing signs of rust, but these were not too much of a problem.

This was a delightful hotel situated in a quiet village central to many places of interest. The hotel provided an excellent choice of fine food especially from the carvery. Service was excellent and the location suited us as it was an ideal position to explore Sussex and visit friends in Brighton.

Very efficient check-in and friendly reception staff. Room was well equipped but disappointed no bath, although the shower was good. Very quiet location. Restaurant carvery good but bit expensive. Would have liked more options if staying more than 1 night. Breakfast very good. Staff very friendly. Definitely an option to stay again should my usual hotel in the Brighton area be booked up again.

My husband and I stayed here for a second visit when we were in the area for a family event. We felt confident enough after our first visit last year to stay here again....which speaks volumes. Our superior room (312) was in the lovely old (?edwardian) house next door that has lovely stained glass on the front door. Our room was on the first floor and was quiet and pleasant with good sized opening windows on 2 walls and a small armchair. There is no lift in this house but the staircase is wide, spacious, easy to climb and has a good handrail. We had no bath but a shower enclosed in a cubicle in a roomy ensure bathroom with a good makeup/ shaving mirror.
