“Interesting Story”
Reviewed 31 July 2011

The visitor centre also contains the small museum displaying the history of Nordegg and it's coal mining heydey. It was a very interesting story telling of the birth and death of a coal mining town. We spent well over an hour looking at the displays although a fast reader could do it in thirty minutes. There is also a cafe inside that has some breakfast and lunch items that smelled good (reasonalbe prices) and so many different types of pies that it would be difficult to choose. It's less than a minute off Hwy 11. They have a one hour Overview Tour of the mine operations at 10 am daily for $5 or a two hour more in dept Technical Tour at 1 pm daily for $10. We missed the 10 am and didn't have time to stay for the 1 pm tour, but we'll do it next time. The gift shop had some beautiful items in it. The museum is free, but there is a box for donations.

“A step back in time - well worth it”
Reviewed 5 January 2011

This summer my family (2 young kids) and I took a tour of the Brazeau Colleries National Historic Site. I'm not really a history buff, but it was an entertaining way to spend a few hours.

You sign in at the Nordegg Visitor Centre in the old yellow school building in downtown Nordegg. While you are waiting for your tour to start there is a small museum, gift shop and excellent "Coal Miners Cafe".

At the start of the tour you follow your guide in your own vehicle up to the site. The tours are guided for safety reasons. Nordegg is now a quaint ghost town, but it was apparently booming in the early parts of the 20th century. You get a real sense of the scale of the operation and the hundreds of men who worked there.

The tour includes all the buildings, the entrance to the mine shaft and the huge briquetting plant. Lots of restoration is taking place, and our guides told us more is fixed up to see every day. The kids had fun exploring and the guides have lots of stories to tell

The natural attractions of the Nordegg/Bighorn region are well known, but if you are looking for something to do on a rainy day, the Brazeau Collieries are well worth it.

The mine site and museum are only open in summer, from May to around Labour Day.
