Spyglass Inn at Shelter Cove
Ranked #1 of 3 Shelter Cove B&B and Inns

We spent two nights in late June and greatly enjoyed the experience! Richard and Margaret were perfect hosts...very helpful and easy to talk to. They even made our dinner reservations for us and got us a window seat at a delightful restaurant overlooking the ocean.Their advice to buy groceries in Redway before the last 21 mile drive to Shelter Cove was very helpful. The Inn was luxurious, spotlessly clean, and inviting. The bed was very comfortable. We slept like proverbial babies. While it was foggy and rainy most of out time there, it didn't matter. The ambiance was wonderful and very relaxing! Having our in-room Jacuzzi tub overlooking the cove, a gas fireplace and a full kitchen made us feel so much at home, we didn't want to leave. We highly recommend staying at the Spyglass Inn.

Room Tip: All of the suites have excellent views and are equally elegant and comfortable

If we can not stay at the Spyglass Inn, then we don't go to Shelter Cove. Why? For many reasons: The location is perfect. It is right on the ocean. Sitting on the spacious private deck is like being in the ocean. The layout of the apartment (it's more than a room) is great for long or short stays. Don't expect daily room service but if you want the bed or towels changed, they will be happy to do so. The place is really clean and retains a new feeling. And, the innkeepers, Richard and Margaret have a sixth sense about when to offer help and when to stay in the background.
Having private kitchen facilities is important in Shelter Cove because the restaurant scene is minimal. There is a good (and clean) gas grill for the guest's use also. We usually stop at the grocery store in Redway and stock up on food for our visit - then love the challenging drive into the Cove to be rewarded with beautiful ocean scenery and the magnificent Spyglass Inn. We have stayed here several times recently. It just gets better each time.

Room Tip: Every room is good.

Myself, my husband and my 15 year old son stayed here in May 2013. We loved this place! Off the beaten track, so secluded and beautiful. The room had a living room, bedroom, and patio with the most amazing views as well as a cute kitchen where you can cook your own meals. We hiked, visited the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse, saw a whale, raccoons, 4 deer, fox and I can't even count what all else just walking around. At night, there are so many stars, it's incredible. I ha forgotten how beautiful and couldn't wait for my son too see the milky way in a clear sky - so beautiful. Richard and his wife are amazing! We drove through the AVenue of the Giants and took so many pictures of these amazing Redwoods, it was sunny, but not too hot and truly beautiful. This was like heaven, truly a "vacation". I can't wait until my husband and I can return and stay longer!

We think this was our 6th time! We ache to come here and get away from the hustle of our daily lives. Sleeping in, cooking our own meals, walks to the black sand beach, naps, jacuzzi with view, sunning on the deck, exploring at the tidepools, watching for whales, wine &cheese sunsets with amazing view, stargazing at night..........it's all incredibly relaxing & romantic.

We've come to think of Richard and Margaret as family. So happy to see them greet us with open arms!

Visited Spyglass Inn while on vacation to the west coast. Spyglass is a beautiful facility and Richard Montante was a wonderful host and am glad to call him a new friend! After arriving and being greeted by Richard, we were surprised "on cue" by a whale passing by on it's way north. OMG! What a view! Shelter Cove is a beautiful, quiet place. If you want peace and beauty this is the place for you. And you will find no better place to stay than at Spyglass Inn. The bed is outstandingly comfortable! The only problem I had (being a flatlander) was with the drive in from Garberville. The road is windy with steep ups and downs. Make sure the breaks on the car are good! Otherwise, it was amazing! This place is like staying at your "well-to-do" friend's house while they are away. It is not only gorgeous but spotless - OH and I mean SPOTLESS. I have never seen any "hotel" room that clean. The tub even glimmered.

There are only 4 rooms which makes it even better, it is so personal. A Jacuzzi (separate bath tub in the bathroom) in the living room so you can sit in it and look out the window at the beautiful ocean and cliffs.

There we lots and lots of magazines about the area and things to do, they left snacks for us along with water in the frig.

Great owners, they really care!!

Room Tip: All rooms are great and have views!

My husband and I stayed for four nights on our honeymoon. Richard and Margaret are wonderful innkeepers. Our room was immaculate and they were always available to answer any questions that we had. Shelter Cove is a place where it is mandatory to just slow down and relax. We stayed in the Dolphin suite and enjoyed seeing all the wildlife so up close. Wonderful walks introduced us to sea lions and harbor seals that any animal lover will fall in love with. Without hesitation I recommend anyone stay in this absolutely serene location.
