Booked The Attic through lastminute.com as it had great reviews. Immediate impression on walking into the room was "wow" because it was so light and spacious with a large balcony and great view.
I understand the other reviewers mentioning the lack of personal contact with the owner/manager, however that suited us, but it was annoying that we had a check out time of 12pm and had someone just walk right into our room at 11.30 to clean the room while we were still in it and we felt we wanted to make sure the room was ok because if you didn't leave the room as you found it you got charged a $25 cleaning fee, so I didn't appreciate the subtle hint and interruption to "hurry up" to leave. And we too passed an office window on the way to our room every day to see a lady working at a desk by the window in her dressing gown about 10.30am - just bizarre!
There were many signs around the room reminding guests to remove their shoes and leave things tidy, you couldn't escape the feeling of being nagged.
It was a reasonably priced place so we weren't expecting The Hilton and the facilities were good with a large bathroom and spa, just perhaps a more welcome atmosphere.

We flew to Australia arrivingin Melbourne 8am and then drove to Daylesford on an increasingly misty and cold day Our reception at Birches was disappointing. As wanderingabouttown commented, the key in the door said it all. There was none of the personal warmth we associate with good B&Bs.Some bread etc for breakfast was in the fridge.

Once we had the woodfire burner roaring the cottage was snug enough. The beds were fine and the facilities generally okay. The cottage certainly needs a freshen-up and it was rather odd to have only two ceiling lights in a large living area with six table lamps about the room.

Those who had written in the visitors' book mostly praised the fact their dogs were allowed to stay with them. That would certainly appeal to some but others may be put off.

Our only contact with the owners during our two-night stay was to have the cottage pointed out on arrival and when I paid on departure. Patti was in her dressing gown which did not seem professional.

We had been really excited about staying at Birches based on the website and publicity material. However, as a B&B experience it was disappointing.

Stayed at Birches with 3 other friends. It's a quaint little cottage with everything you need in it. Yes it is dated but we expected this as it is part of the charm. It is a dated little cottage but very clean. My personal recommendation would be to bring your own shampoo, conditioner and towels, some shampoo and conditioner is available in the cottage but it was half used etc.
The owner made things easier for us by leaving the key in the door so we could just come in and relax. I would stay there again as the setting was gorgeous and very conveniently close and walking distance to the lake, main street and the information center.

Not really sure why these people are in the hospitality industry. Dismissive phone contact, zero contact on arrival or departure... The key in the door said it all. Accomodation itself was adequate but extremely disappointing. The lighting was dim: no overhead lights and the wattage in the lamps inadequate. Towels clean, but very old... many with frayed bits trailing off. The shower is located in a rather deep spa with a somewhat perilous climb over cracked tiling. Not somewhere I would stay again at this price.

We stayed at the Birches in the "Attic Room" for 2 nights and completely enjoyed our stay. As we arrivied in the dark on the first evening we were excited to wake up to our surrounds the next morning - it did not disappoint! The room was very spacious, welcoming and well equipped. The bed was king size and very comfortable - being cold the reverse cycle heat pump was amazing (considering it was -0 degrees on our first morning). The bathroom was large and well equipped. The view from the balcony was movie-like picturesque scenery. We would not hesitate returning for another stay. Amazing getaway - only suggestion is to avoid the Lake House for dinner or any thing else - pretencious bullsiht for the price they charge!!!

I stayed here for my second time in the cottage "Wren". I just loved it the first time i had to come back, this time for 2 nights. the bed is very comfortable, the pillows are very good and the bed has a electric blanket for cold nights. I used the fire place the whole day and night, it was just amazing relaxing. I work in a hotel myself with 12 years experience and i just love the friendliness and easy way of the host. This is one of my favourite spots when i need to get away from the city. Eggs and cereals are provided, Coles is 8 min walk away. Also the city centre is very close. The Daylesford Lake is also 4 min walk away.
I really love this place and can recommend it to everyone who needs relaxing time with their partner or just alone.

Room Tip: The Wren, cottage for 2, with spa and a fire place

My wife and I celebrated an anniversary in the attic on a stay 3 pay for two mid week deal, we thought the apartment was huge compared to some of the other places that were offering self contained accommodation, the high balcony is great and overlooked by nobody, we loved the relaxed nature and easy-going welcome of the owner and appreciated her understanding very much when we spilt some wine on the carpet, if its privacy you want with lots of space and great value this is it, thank you Patti.

Room Tip: The Attic and high balcony is very private
