Ferntree Rainforest Lodge
GreenLeadersSilver level
Reviewed 22 November 2013

When my sister and I were planning our trip to Tropical North Queensland, we wanted to make sure we stayed where we would have the most exposure to the rainforest, and yet still be comfortable. The Ferntree really filled the bill for us. We booked a private cabin for 2 nights. The cabin itself is comprised of the main area, which is the bedroom with a very large, comfy king size bed and lots of windows to look out onto the tropics that surround you. There is an air conditioner that worked very well in the heat of the afternoon. The bathroom is of decent size with shower only, no bath. And there's a little alcove off the bedroom that has a spot to set a suitcase, a counter with a hot water kettle, and below is a small refrigerator. Inside the fridge we found coffee packets, tea, sweeteners and the little containers of milk. On the front porch there was wicker seating for 2 and a coffee table. It was nice each morning to sit out there, drink our coffee, and listen to the sounds of the rainforest.

The Cassowary Café put on a decent breakfast buffet each morning. We were disappointed that we were a few weeks early to enjoy the fresh exotic tropical fruit grown in the area. But the cantaloupe, watermelon and especially the pineapple were delicious. There were yogurts, breads, muffins, cereals, fruit, juices, milks, coffees and teas. I believe there were packets of instant oatmeal as well. There was enough to give us a good start to a day of exploring. And the girl who worked there was very sweet and kept it well stocked.

The staff in the lodge were very friendly and helpful. Our first morning we reported that our shower head dripped loudly all night. When we returned that afternoon, we had a brand new shower head!

The 2 pools on the property are very nice. After a day of enjoying the beach (but not the sea... jellyfish warning!) we had a swim in the pool by the lodge and it was lovely. Perfect temperature.

The location of the Ferntree is just amazing! It sits back in the rainforest and you're surrounded by the sights, sounds and smells. We felt like we were thousands of miles from civilization, but a short walk to the lodge or the Cassowary Café and we had wifi! And in less than a 10 minute walk, we were at the most beautiful beach, Myall Beach. There were warnings everywhere that it was box jellyfish season and enter the water at your own risk. Between the jellyfish and the warning of saltwater crocs, we were satisfied with strolling the beach, rather than going in for a swim!

I would love to come back to the Ferntree and bring more family. I can just see kids and grandkids enjoying it as well. The garden lofts look wonderful for families. I would recommend this place to anyone. If you're someone who's looking for luxury and pampering, you might want to stay in Port Douglas. But for those who are looking for an up close and personal visit with the Tropical North, this is the place for you!

Nice environment and resort. Rooms are a bit run-down.
Free Wifi only in the lobby and breakfast area.
Free parking.
Breakfast was quite simple, not much choice.
Very friendly and helpful owners.

Overall due to the price and tripadvisor ratings I had expected a bit more.
Not sure if I would stay again - but as always this is also a question of options and prices.

Cape tribulation is a fantastic retreat. Once you cross the daintree ferry you are in a different world. Ferntree was in a great location, friendly staff, free wifi and good value. It was quiet season when we visited and fairly empty. The kitchen is basic and a bit rundown but this would be easy to fix.

The staff was very friendly and the resort in itself is OK, although the rooms could do with some modernisation. It's a shame that the barbecue was quite filthy, because apart from that we were pleased with our 2-night stay.
Internet, the laundry facilities, a nice breakfast buffet and the two pools are definitely a plus.

Having just returned from 8 nights at Ferntree I can honestly say it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed, a real hidden paradise. Of course, much of that is the beautiful location - it really can't be beaten - but the rest is the lovely calm and generous atmosphere at Ferntree Rainforest Resort. It is not what is commonly thought of as a resort, as the vibe reflects the calm, beauty and peace of the surrounds, but as a "retreat" it was absolutely perfect. I stayed in a small cabin, which exactly suited my need (quite minimal) but I could see a whole range of accommodations for others to suit their needs. The best thing is that they are not all close together but situated down winding paths on the property - all a lovely walk to the Cassowary Cafe. On that subject; the food was delicious and ample.
I can't thank Cassie, Kane, Kevin and Melanie enough for their friendship and generosity during my stay. I will be back soon to visit my favourite spot on a lounge by the pool under the trees. x

We staye two nights at Ferntree resort. As some of the other reviews have said, the place is being revived by the new owners - its a work in progress. Even so, it's a great budget option with some really good features. The common areas a well kept, the grounds are lush and the rooms were comfortable, clean and private. The tropical breakfast was a great bonus as not many places include this in their tarrif. The restaurant has good food for a decent price in a relaxed environment. Cape Trib is a relatively isolated place (limited phone service etc) and Ferntree is a budget friendly, relaxed base to enjoy this special place from.

We stayed 3 nights and we're upgraded to a garden loft room which was very clean and serviced daily. Continental breakfasts were great with fresh fruit, fantastic muesli, yoghurt and a choice of breads and excellent tea and coffee. A great location, friendly staff and a lovely swimming pool. Having glimpsed other accommodation on Cape trib I think we had the best, with overall feel and proximity to beach we were very pleased. Our three children (and ourselves) loved this place and keep asking to go back. Thanks :)
