“Rainforest getaway”
Reviewed 9 July 2011

Me and my boyfriend stayed at Red Mill house for four days whilst on a tour of Queensland. Of all the places we stayed this one was by far the best and we had the most fantastically relaxing time there. Set within beautiful grounds and teeming with local wildlife (including bandicoots, a huge variety of birdlife and cute little tree frogs) we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves.

Andrew and Trish were the perfect hosts and really couldn't do enough for us. Each morning we were treated to freshly prepared breakfast - featuring an array of tropical fruits, many of which we had never seen before.

They really made us feel welcome, helping us organise activities, offering advice on trips out and places to visit, and even providing us with aftersun and coolpacks when we rather stupidly managed to get ourselves properly sunburnt whilst snorkelling!

We really cant recommend this place enough and we would certainly stay again if we ever found ourselves back in Queensland.

Your hosts, Andrew and Trish, are attentive, friendly, helpful and welcoming. On request, they will book your Daintree River bird watching /spotlighting tours, book your restaurant and provide you with expert advice on local attractions and where to see various birds if you are a keen bird watcher.

My room was attractive and welcoming with a queen bed, reading lights, chair, storage shelves, ensuite and small ground floor private deck with table and chairs which overlook the garden.

Bird feeders, bird baths and native plants attract a variety of bird life which is logged daily.

Breakfast is delicious and fills you up until dinner time. It consists of a variety of fruits, juices, cereals, fresh breads, teas or coffee and a cooked breakfast.

I'll stay here again.

Deserves all the compliments other reviewers have given it. Properly cooked breakfasts, including home-baked bread and home-made yoghurt, decent coffee, local fruits, all consumed on a generous balcony overlooking a lively tropical garden (there are wild turkeys always busy in it). It avoids all the horrors of many B and B's in Australia: for example, no bedrooms cluttered with space-consuming decorative objects, no undrinkable port lying in wait for the unwary traveller, no supermarket "breakfast provisions" which enable other owners to escape making real breakfasts at all. In its price-range, it is the best B and B we have struck in Australia and we have lived here since 1965.
Finding evening meals may be a problem. There is a modest cafe-restaurant in the village itself, which is fine for most meals. For something more expensive (real city prices!), we went to the nearby Eco-Lodge where the cooking is elaborate rather than good: typical Queensland barramundi wrapped very appropriately in something akin to paper-bark and tasting like cardboard. Take the kangaroo dish instead or, better, take up Andrew and Trish on their offer to stage a barbecue in the B and B itself. They are wonderful hosts, attentive and knowledgeable but never intrusive. Ian Laurie.

Room Tip: An upstairs room may be best

Andrew is the best host! He was amazingly helpful and friendly; couldn't do enough for us. Showed us the best deals and excursions, lent us stuff we needed. The breakfast was excellent; home made yoghurt, various cooked items.
The location is fantastic; a bird watcher's dream, with walks and things to do and Andrew has all the information to share.
The rooms are simple and have all you need. The price is reasonable and you get great value for your money.
Fantastic!

Initially we had been looking at the eco-retreats in the area but ended up choosing a b'n'b, the Red Mill House. All I can say is that I’m really pleased we did so. In a tranquil setting, Red Mill House itself is beautiful and elegant with lots of wood, glass and light. Trish and Andrew were extremely kind and know exactly how to make you feel welcome, and their local knowledge is invaluable. The cooked breakfast was delicious and included homemade yogurt and local fruit. We got all our washing done and hung up our clothes in the beautiful tropical garden. They also had a lovely little secluded pool, although due to our short stay we didn’t get the chance to use it. I regret slightly not finding out a little bit more about the local birds, as I didn’t realise that this was the main attraction. In two days we did, however, go on a boat trip to see the crocs and travel up to cape tribulation for a few walks through the rainforest and mangroves. I couldn’t recommend Trish and Andrew more highly; they are fantastic, as is Red Mill.

We stayed at Red Mill House for 3 nights recently at the end of a two month trip to Australia. We wish we had booked for longer! Our hosts Trish and Andrew could not have been more gracious and helpful. They helped us organize a guided birding day, gave us maps of where the best birding trails and roads were in the vicinity of the B and B and provided a wonderful breakfast each morning. The house is set in a lovely garden and the room was great - comfortable and well equipped.

Red Mill House is set in the tiny village of Daintree so the choices of where to eat in the evening are a bit limited if you don't want to drive anywere but the local restaurant was perfectly adequate. For day trips, Cape Tribulation is just a short drive away - a wonderous area of twisty roads and multiple signs warning travellers to be careful of the elusive cassowary!

We would recommend Red Mill House to people with any level of interest in birding or nature in the rain forest.
