“Great potential with a bit training”
Reviewed 20 November 2011

We stayed for 2 nights. The Resort has a great location, walking distance to Ferry and next to Supermarket IGA.
We stayed in a Hotel room on the 3 floor. An Elevator was available. The room was big and had a great view, also it was very quiet. However lots of scuff marks on walls, the Carpet was covered with marks, and the Smoke detector and the lights in the entry to our Room were broken. Even though, the Resort seemed to be pretty empty, our room was not done until late afternoon.
The Pool was huge and very clean, lots of Sun chairs were available. Unfortunately we found dirty plates still at 11 am at the Pool from the Day before. Nobody had the courtesy to tidy up.
Breakfast was included in the room rate and was delicious and tasty with a good variety. But Staff couldn`t be bothered to greet guests or to clean up the tables afterwards.
There is a 2% credit Card surcharge which I think is very high.
It could be a beautiful Resort with better Staff training.

Room Tip: All Rooms are great.

Thank you for taking the time to offer a review of our resort.
I am glad you enjoyed your room and the lagoon pool.I am dissappointed to hear about the scuff marks and dirt marks on the carpet.
Please be assured we are addressing these issues already. We have a painter, repainting rooms and the carpets and upholstery are being cleaned on a weekly programme.
Continued staff training is also a priority here at Blue on Blue and we are striving to have exceptional staff, not the type you describe, so thank you for letting us know your thoughts.
If you are ever get back this way, just let us know we would love to welcome you back!

Ok I want to write a really informative review about this resort and have been thinking how to best describe this place, it is very nice and has huge potential but I was left thinking, such a pity, a few little things detract from it and made it miss the mark. Nothing major just expect it if staying here.

First the location, the resort is next to the ferry terminal, very handy. The room we booked was a standard studio. It was the one without the view, our room looked onto the car park of the ferry terminal. It's ok, no one can see in as the balcony glass is frosted. The room is very modern and nice. It comes with a standard size bed. Couch and small kitchenette. The bathroom has a shower and bath and also a washing machine. Bed was a bit small for a couple but I guess we did book a standard room, but the room aside from the bed is quite big. Feels very modern. Just a pity there are small things that detract from the room, like scuffs on the wall which are not cleaned up. Not that I care but it's meant to be five star. My girlfriend commented that one thing odd was no rubbish bin in the bathroom, so girls look out!

The complex is interesting, it actually is slightly incomplete. There is a mix of owner apartments and peppers hotel apartments. There are two pools, one near reception which is normal size then a really huge one to the back of the resort. Along the pool is a temporary wall hiding the unfinished part of the resort. But don't let that put you off, the pool area is really nice with a BBQ area and grass areas. On the other side of the resort is a marina.

The hotel has a bar and restaurant, but the place caters for weddings and will close if they have a function, they e-mailed us to warn us that Saturday night had a wedding and it would all be closed, so keep an eye out. The restaurant was in my option a little pricey for the food they served, the meals were nice, but just seemed to miss the mark a bit for the price. I would strongly suggest going to Man Fridays (Mexican) which is a short 5-10 min walk away instead. Also on the Sunday we went to All Seasons which is up the road and has a $20 steak night on Sunday which was nice.

While talking of the restaurant, Breakfast was interesting. Saturday we went down at 9 am, and although there was not many people there, it was a mess, it felt like the food was put out at 7 am and since then no one topped anything up. Then Sunday we went at 7 am and it was all pretty and things were cleaned up and drinks, were topped up. So I am not sure why someone can't just keep things tided up during the course of breakfast, it's supposed to run until 10 am.

If you want to party, then this place is very quiet, more for weddings or a relaxing weekend away. But you can go to Base X hostel which is about 10-15 minutes walk down the road and party the night away -- you can get a bus there too but they don't run too late. I think taxi's run after that.

If you want to see stuff on the island you have a few options, first realise this hotel being in Nelly Bay has no beaches, just the pool in the hotel. But being next to the ferry you can get buses to the rest of the island, Horseshoe bay for example is worth checking out and has a beach with a net to keep the stingers out. It also has a beachy feel with a few bars and restaurants. But if you take a bus Radical Bay be aware that you get dropped off the main road and have to walk a fair way to get to beach. A better option is to take a track from Horseshoe Bay or get a car.

What we did is rent a car, now I did not bother with the rental place in the ferry terminal car park as their cars are not allowed down the tracks to Radical Bay or Westpoint, instead we rented from Bryan Abbot Autos in Arcadia. We called him and he came down to the hotel and picked us up and took us to Arcadia to get the car. We rented a 4wd Suziki Jimmy (I think) for $70. With that you can go everywhere on the island. Don't be scared the road to Radical Bay is a sealed road but with a few big potholes. The road to Westpoint is shown as a 4wd road but really is an unsealed gravel road and worth the trip, just at the end there is a little sand to be wary of.

Due to the weather we did not go out on a snorkel boat, but one advantage of the hotel location is that most cruise boats pick up from the marina at the hotel, which is handy.

Ok, hope this helps.

Room Tip: Choose the cheaper room why pay more for a view if you are not going to spend most of your time in t...

We stayed for 3 nights in the Newport wing of the resort. Location was pretty good within walkind distance to the Nelly Bay pier, IGA supermarket and the local bus stop that that takes one around the island. Two beautiful pools, one very large and was a great place to spend the afternoon relaxing after hiking around the island. The best beach on the island was at Balding Bay, which turned out to also be the unofficial nude beach :)
The only negative of the room was the lack of a fan in the bathroom and kitchen area. otherwise a good stay and would recommend it.

We stayed here over the Easter long weekend. The hotel is in a great location being directly visable and accessible when you exit the ferry terminal. It is a 50 meter walk if that across the car park to Peppers reception.

The room was lovely with a beautiful view. The resort has two swimming pools with one being a very large lagoon pool which was lovely. Being close to the ferry terminal, it was easy to catch a bus around the island as this is where the main stop is for people arriving/leaving the island.

Getting around the island is easy on a day pass. Make sure you ask for a 'adult daily', this will allow you to get on and off the bus all day without having to buy a ticket for each trip.

We recommend the Forts Walk where we saw a Koala in the wild, ha ha, which was nice. The view from the top of the Forts is great. Horseshoe bay has markets on a Sunday and has a number of restaurants/bars. I would recommend Noodies for lunch or dinner, yum. Also the Koala Sanctuary at the Bugalow Bay Backpackers was a great hands on afternoon with animals! You get to hold a number of animals with the entrance price, it is additional to hold a Koala. Good little bar there are Indian restaurant but you must book if you want to eat at Bombay Nights.

Breakfast was included and was buffet style, very nice. Also it was great for dinner. If you are eating and it is windy, don’t let them put you outside, insist on indoor seat or go somewhere else.

Overall we thought Peppers was in a great location and very nice.

The minute I arrived at Peppers on Magentic Island, I instantly felt relaxed. The rooms are spacious. I would recommend a room facing the water. The meals at the restaurant were amazing as was the selection of wines. The pool was massive! The only unfortunate thing is there are no lifts so if you are staying on the 3rd floor it can be a mission getting your bags to your room. I would defintely recommend and would stay here again myself.

Room Tip: Second floor -where you get a view but can also manage without a lift carrying bags.

We recently had a 5 night stay at the resort and overall were very pleased and would definitely stay there again. A great location from which to access the ferry and the local bus service. Very good Mexican restaurant and a supermarket nearby. A big buffet breakfast was included in the room price to set us up nicely for a day out. We found the staff to be very helpful and courteous.

Stayed at Peppers for 7 nights in a 3 bedroom apartment with plunge pool. Only read these reviews after I had booked but before we stayed. Given the mixed nature of the reviews I was pretty wary. Unfortunately it turns out that I was pretty underwhelmed by the service and the resort. To list:

1. No porters to assist with luggage on arrival/departure. Staff seemed relatively disinterested - but that might be just a subjective impression on my part.
2. Room service menu very limited - ordered it a few times (reluctantly) due to preferring not to cook. The $5 "delivery charge' for room service is a world first for me (this made me disinclined to tip the staff). What is worse is the little card that asks the guest to call back when they want their plates collected. Another world first. After not making this call a couple of times, we would wake to find our plates outside our door from last night's dinner - and staying there until late afternoon. On the 3rd time, we did make the call to collect (when we noticed the card). Unfortunately the plates were still there the next morning. Just a bad look for a resort.
3. The 2% credit card surcharge that appears on everything is a bad idea. Here is a tip - raise your prices by 2%. It bothers people less.
4. Resort appears to be in pretty poor condition. Peeling paint in a number of areas (wall near the pool especially).
5. The non-heated pools were not too much of a problem as we had great weather, but you would want to be careful if you were travelling there in cooler months than October (when we were there).
6. Towels are changed every day but the rooms are only cleaned on every 3rd day!? We had a do not disturb sign on on the day that must have been our designated cleaning day, so on our 5th day I had to request a clean... Really?
7. Our own pool was not maintained/checked during our stay.
8. The breakfast buffet (included) is pretty limited. Toast, cereals and exactly one sort of eggs (scrambled) every day. But a great location overlooking the marina.
9. One of our bedrooms (not the master) had a sliding door which could not be double locked, ie. all my 5 year old boy needed to do was flick a door snib and he could have been outside. Would be better if these doors could be secured with a double lock or external lock.
10. Might be an idea to get some service training into your staff. Example: we were there for 7 nights - not once (even on departure) were we asked about how our stay was going. Not a big thing but to me, it gives the impression that the staff don't give a hoot about the guests.

Have stayed a number of times at other Peppers resorts (particularly Palm Cove) and this booking was made as much on our experiences there than anything else. Unfortunately the Magnetic Island version seems to be a very poor cousin to other Peppers resorts. For a peak time of the year (Victorian school holidays) the resort seemed pretty empty so can only guess that people are talking with their feet by not turning up.

Good location and $400 a night doesn't exactly entitle me to the Taj Mahal - but I expected better and based on other Peppers resorts, I was very disappointed.
