Owner description: The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of World Heritage Listed rainforest, steep ravines and picuresque waterfalls within the Barron Gorge National Park. This famous railway winds its way from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest. Constructed between 1882 and 1891 it is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. Hundreds of men were employed to build the 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges that stand as a monument to the pioneers of tropical North Queensland

This is a "Must Do" if you visit Cairns. We travelled the train up & back. The views are breathtaking and the whole trip was wonderful. The town of Kuranda is full of all varieties of shops and easy to spend a few hours strolling around and taking in lunch and the markets.Kuranda Station is a picture full of ferns and other plants. You are told the story regards the building of the railway during the trip which is really interesting. The train stops for tem minutes during the trip so you are able to take photos of the falls and gorge. This was a great experience.

“Return by train”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Went up via the Skyrail and returned by train. It stopped once for photograph opportunities. There is an on-board commentary giving detailed information of how the line was built and used.
If you know what day you would like to make the trip it is worth booking in advance for big savings.

“Worth the journey, but prices vary.”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

This is a Cairns 'must do ' but prices vary so shop around. The train trip up and sky rail back is great as you can pay extra for a bus transfer between stations, or you can get picked up from your hotel. Unfortunately though we found that our pick up transfer and ticket collection was a bit unorganised and in given modern technology they need to leap into the 21st century. Also, if you want coffee at the railway station before you head off get there early as it was probably the slowest and least organised cafe in Cairns.

“Nice journey”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

It was a nice journey which is full of natural beauties. The train goes slowly and stops at some points in order to give time to take photos.

“Just an easy and unforgettable experience to see Kuranda beautiful scenery”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

Either return trip by Train or return trip by Sky Rail, or the best is both, going to Kuranda by Train and come back to Cairns by Sky Rail, give us amazing experience to see Kuranda and surrounding area in easy and enjoyable way.

We chose train up to Kuranda, start at 8.30am, the journey start from Cairns Station, pick other passenger at Freshwater Station, then the train continue the scenic journey through the tropical forest to Kuranda. The train passed a waterfall near Stoney Creek and then stop to give time for passenger to enjoy scenic view and short walk at beautiful Barron Gorge.

Finally the train arrived at a tropical lush green Kuranda Station after two hours travelling. Passenger then left the train to enjoy and walk at Kuranda town centre. A row of souvenir shops and cafes along the town centre are waiting. Other option at Kuranda is a short distance traveling by boat along Barron River.

After lunch time, on the way back to Cairns we chose the Sky Rail, start from Kuranda Sky Rail Station at 13.30, then traveling above a beautiful tropical green forest of Kuranda region, amazing experience gentley and smooth gliding over the very green dense trees canopies.

Arrived back at Caravonica Station (the lower Sky Rail Station) after passing two Sky Rail stations, wait at the cafe with souvenir shop, before transferred by bus to Cairns around 15.30.

There are other attractions such as Tjapukai, Aboriginal cultural show near the Skyrail's Smithfield Terminal.
