We have just returned from a 7 day Legendary Longreach and Winton tour and would have to say this is the perfect way to enjoy a real taste of the West, journeying out and back by rail on the Spirit of the Outback. We felt privileged to be part of some amazing experiences which are exclusive to Outback Aussie Tours. Our coach driver, Brad, was fantastic - nothing was too much trouble and his quirky sense of humour kept us all amused. Our 'journey of a lifetime' took in everything the west had to offer, including 3 cattle/sheep station tours, the Longreach School of the Air (very interesting), the Waltzing Matilda Centre, Australian Age of Dinosaurs and the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways, the Qantas Founders Museum, the Stockman's Hall of Fame and the Drover's Sunset Dinner Cruise followed by a lovely dinner around the camp fire under the stars on the banks of the Thomson River. The entertainment provided by Grant and Michael (Heartland Theatre Larrikins and Legends Show) was a fitting way to end a perfect holiday! The incredible sunsets and the brilliance of the stars at night are something the west does to perfection!

We didn't know what to expect when we boarded the M.V. Explorer for our Drovers Sunset Cruise, run by Outback Aussie Tours, in Longreach recently. A local had suggested that the cruise was very "touristy" and the alternative paddle steamer cruise was the better option.

She couldn't have been more wrong! The cruise, with expert commentary with a very local flavour and accent from Captain Kim, was excellent. We cruised the Thomson River for over an hour while the sun set and although it wasn't the most spectacular sunset we have experienced it was certainly memorable and enjoyable. Drinks were available on board and nearing the end of the cruise Kim brought out nibbles for us to enjoy prior to disembarking for a dinner on the riverbank.

The Drovers Dinner Camp, the setting for dinner, was a open area and a large camp fire was there to warm us as we entered. Tables were set for dinner and there was a stage area, centred on an old hut at the front of the area.

Again, not knowing what to expect for dinner, we were pleasantly surprised as to the quality of the food, which was served on the traditional "men/women", alternating basis. The courses that night were a steak hot pot and a barramundi fillet, both of which were tasty and excellently prepared and served. Drinks were not available on-shore but could be purchased on the boat prior to disembarking. BYO is also an option.

Dessert was similarly an alternate course arrangement and was of similar standard to the mains.

Entertainment was provided by Michael and Grant, also known as Heartland Theatre. They performed through dinner and most of the numbers were their own compositions. Again we were pleasantly surprised - maybe we had set our expectations too low! - but the boys did a great job in contributing to the enjoyment and atmosphere of the whole evening.

The Drovers Sunset Tour starts early, with pick-up from Longreach accommodation at around 4:30pm, returning about four hours later. Overall it was extremely well organised, was most enjoyable and is highly recommended.

We did pass the paddle steamer tour a couple of times while on the river and decided that we had indeed made the right choice with the Drovers Sunset Cruise.

This was a unique and different way to spend an evening in Longreach, where the dining options are somewhat limited, as you would expect.

Just back from outback experience with Outback Aussie Tours. What a great time we had. Can't recommend them enough. From the welcome at the airport ,the town tour, the Thompson River cruise ,dinner and show on the riverbank, stockmans hall of fame, camden park station experience, the qantas museum and winton ' age of dinosaur' and waltzing matilda tour. Packed so much in 4 days but was very relaxing. Great bus drivers, full of knowledge of the area. Always punctual, very friendly and helpful. The 2 guys that did the Heartland show on the riverbank [ Michael and Brett ]. What can I say, superb entertainers. Loved the whole trip so much we are looking into doing other tours with this company after the summer
