We stayed for 2 nights in early October and this was certainly the most memorable of all our 18 stops while touring Australia. The hosts were friendly, helpful, considerate and had a great sense of humour, even gifting us a bottle of wine and a discount! Theroom was clean, (most important), fresh and had every amenity we could have wanted. Breakfast was a great experience, where else could one get a full English breakfast sitting on a veranda in 30 degrees with views over a superbly maintained garden and pool. If travelling south from here don't forget to ask for the "BIG" list, good fun.

G'day Graham - hope all is well in sunny London. Sense of humour is most important, especially when on holiday. If you are intrigued by the 'BIG' list, then do a search on 'big things in australia'.

All the best - love to all in the UK

We stayed overnight at Licuala Lodge in October and wish we'd been able to stay longer.

Mission Beach is a beautiful and very relaxed area of the Australian coast - with a bit of Skydiving thrown in to the mix if you feel that way! There's a lovely rainforest feel to both the whole township, as well as the lodge. We awoke to the sound of so many birds - we felt like we were in an aviary! It was amazing! (We had slept with our door open by accident - perhaps wouldn't have woken us up if we'd closed it!)

We were pleasantly surprised to be visited by a local cassowary (or 3!) during our short stay too!

The rooms are beautiful, so clean and well equipped with a fridge, ceiling fan, complimentary toiletries and bedding/towels. The lodge itself is equipped with everything you'd need - a massive fridge (stocked with a variety of very cheap drinks and ice lollies, full kitchen facilities (including condiments, cling film and tin foil!), a BBQ and outdoor eating area, TV, games, books washing facilities ($3 per load), swimming pool and pool towels and free tea and coffee making facilities too.

The owners are so friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay an extremely comfortable and enjoyable one. Breakfast was yummy too!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Lodge to anyone - it is a lovely place to be and stay!

Room Tip: All 4 rooms I saw looked the same - there wasn't a bad one there!

Hi Beck - glad to know that you are back safe and sound in sunny Poole. Also glad that you mentioned that you slept with your door open. Besides the doors to each room there are screen doors and curtains, and having the door open at night allows a lovely night breeze to float through the room. The Lodge is the kind of safe place where you can leave your door open at night - absolutely no worries :-)

Lots of people at the moment are finding it expensive to eat out at restaurants all the time, so they do welcome the cooking facilities that we offer - and the fresh herbs straight from the garden. The lemon basil is to die for.

All the best

This is a very special place, and we would have loved to stay more than the 3 nights our schedule allowed. The hosta are very friendly and helpful, with a good sense of (British) humor. Our room had all the creature comfort we could possibly ask for, and sitting on our balcony and watching the birds in the flowering bushes of the lovely grounds was a most pleasant way to end the days of hiking in Licuala State Forest or beachcombing on one of the tranquil near-by beaches. At night we listened to the call of Barking Owls or caught glimpses of the Bandicoots ambling by, but the highlight was the daily visits of a Southern Cassowary hoping for a rare handout (rare, since the breakfast was too good to leave much behind). A great spot for nature lovers and everybody else looking for e quiet and enjoyable place to relax!

Hi Juergen - glad to know that you are back home safe and sound. Many thanks for pointing out to us that we have a Barking Owl. It seems that very slowly the birds are now coming back to Mission Beach. Our female cassowary is still visiting on a daily basis, and we are expecting the male cassowary to appear with chicks in the first week of November 2012.
Best wishes to all in sunny California :-)

We stayed two nights at Licuala Lodge and enjoyed every minute of it. The rooms are very nice and comfortable, the garden is very beautiful, Sue & Mike are really friendly and helpful and the breakfast is amazing. We had a lot of fun in the swimming pool and would have stayed much longer if we had the time. If you consider visiting Mission Beach, you should really stay here!

Stayed here overnight with my partner. What a beautiful place to stay. Upon entering the lodge you are greeted by beautiful gardens and very friendly hosts. The room was clean, comfortable and very welcoming. The whole place has a homely, relaxed feel to it, and you could easily spend your days lounging around the pool, taking a walk through the gardens or sitting on the verandah reading a book. The breakfast was delicious and a good variety of food. Meeting some cassowary's up close in the morning was also an added bonus. Great value for money!! Would highly recommend this place, we wish we could have stayed longer, but will definitely be back!

Hi Molly - thanks for your kind words, much appreciated. The gardens are slowly returning to their former glory (pre-cyclone Yasi 2011), and we hope to finish all the work by the end of this year. Our male cassowary is now sitting on some eggs, and we hope to see him plus a few chicks by early November. Meanwhile the female cassowary still visits on a daily basis.

Thanks once again

We only stayed the one night at Licuala Lodge but could have easily stayed longer. It felt like home away from home. Hosts couldn't have been friendlier. Room was clean, very comfortable. The balcony was a great spot to enjoy a quiet drink. The lack of hot water was a little disappointing but this could have been due to the new solar system just installed. We used the kitchen and BBQ, they were also very clean. The breakfast was delicoius and the tariff very reasonable. Cheap beer, wine and icecreams are also available. The garden setting is beautiful even after Cyclone Yasi destroyed some of it. The highlight of our stay was the Cassowaries who visited twice.

Hi - many thanks for the review. We now have a solar systems for all our power and hot water, which were installed this year (2012). One of the things that we need to get to grips with is that if we have several consecutive cloudy days we will need to switch the hot water to the booster to ensure a plentiful supply of hot water, especially during the winter months. Here's to hoping that it doesn't happen again :-)

We used the kitchen and BBQ, and found everything clean.
Breakfast was lovely, pancakes are a must! Good service.
Wifi was a bit slow. But it works!
We've seen the cassowary's in the beautiful garden!

Hi Benjamin - thanks for your kind words. Glad to know that you and your family are back safe and sound in sunny Holland. Mission Beach is a rural town and as such wi-fi can be slow at times compared to the big cities. However, our wonderful Government has promised us all 'super-fast' broadband, and we should be getting the new service some time in 2013. Fingers crossed.
Hope that you got your mobile phone OK :-)

Veel dank
