Possum Valley Rainforest Cottages
Reviewed 24 September 2013

This valley of possums is amazing and so is Paul who runs it. A good place to wind down away from the rush. Rustic, private and relaxing, in tune with the nature. Ideal setting to light up a camp fire and sip some wine with family and friends. Rooms and facilities are basic but exudes a rustic charm of its own. Stayed both at Black bean and maple cottages, both are equally good. Kids enjoyed the games room and boating. Plenty of stuff to explore around.

Rustic, quaint, isolated...

We decided on a last minute weekend away with our two kids 9 & 12 debating on a camping trip or some accommodation near the bush..(somewhere)?.

Possum Valley was the winner as was also recommended by friends with kids who have visited on 5 different occasions. This weekend was magic as it felt like we were away for a week! Started out with a beautiful scenic drive to an out of the way acreage just 35 mins outside of Atherton, which we stopped in at for food supplies at the international winning IGA...

On check-in, after a brief meeting with Paul the host/owner we setup camp in the "Maple cottage" this place was massive with 4 rooms, fully self contained kitchen, "cooking with gas" stove & a BBQ downstairs on verandah if you needed etc.
We then set off for a quick guide from Paul through the "off the grid" power system running the whole place, which took us down to a little water fall then back up to the homestead to the rest of the solar and battery inverted system...I want one! That evening we had the locals on dusk, we had the local wallabies & friendly possums come around for their somewhat expected feed, so we hand fed them some cut up fruit & a little bread with honey, they loved it, so did the kids...and me! We sat around the camp fire out the front of the cottage for the rest of the evening after cooking up a storm, (unbelievable there were sharp knives and a potato masher) what a great day.
Next day we went off to visit the local sights, we spent most of the day at the Herberton Historical village, heaps to look at, had lunch there too.
Another evening feeding the possums and wallabies, then down to the games room to play some pool and table tennis, the gear is a little worn but still very functional, my kids were just happy to have our attention teaching them these games too.. We then set off for an evening nature walk/spot lighting, kids were scared as I took them through one of the 3 or 4 purpose built walking tracks, although a couple of large trees had fallen and crossed the track it was still easily visible and marked with ribbon, we saw a Lemuroid Ringtail Possum, but hoping for a glimpse of the Tree kangaroo...next time.
Time to head off the next day, great waking up to the sound of so many birds and such a nice cool temperature, didn't get a chance to use the Sauna or the little row boat, oh well, we'll be back and do it next time.
Maple cottage has good mobile reception so Next-G for PC works well though not sure about Blackbean cottage, your best off leaving all that stuff behind I anyhow I suppose...

Oh we did encounter some grass ticks and leaches so remember to take your teatree oil etc. There maybe mould on the shower curtains and cobwebs here and there but you shouldn't care, it's in the rainforest so not to be confused with a sterile high-rise city building.
This place was almost as cheap as camping (in camping grounds) but with all the luxuries of supplied comfy bed/toilet all cooking utensils and hot shower...can't recommend it enough.

Took the kids to visit the Crater and waterfall on the drive back to Cairns.

We stayed here for a weekend with friends who had booked both cabins. One for the adults, and one for the teens. It is so secluded that we felt perfectly safe doing this. The games room is between both cottages and served us well, however I found it hard to leave the veranda and the serenity, just sitting and watching the wildlife go by, occasionally reading my book. We were lucky we had little rain, nearing the end of the wet season. It does get cool so come prepared, even in summer. We found this a relief after the humidity of Port Douglas and Mossman.

I was a bit concerned after reading previous comments, but found the cottages to be clean enough, and no mildew on the bedding at all. It is in the heart of the tropical rainforest, so we would have been surprised to find no signs of damp anyway. We self catered (your only option) and the kitchen is more than adequate. The bathroom likewise, but certainly not 5 star, not even 3-4 star, but that's not why you stay here. There is a sauna which you stoke up yourself. Not something you find every day!

Wildlife is abundant, and some of our party finally saw some tree kangaroos which was high on their wish list. I was very happy to see a golden bower bird decorating his bower on one of our walks.

If you want a relaxing, comfortable time amongst nature, this is for you. If you want bright lights, don't bother. Prices are very reasonable too.

We stayed for 3 nights in Blackbean Cottage and had a wonderful time. The main reason to visit was to see the birds and wildlife. We were not disappointed with Golden Bowerbird and all the high altitude endemics seen. We didn't see a Tree Kangaroo, however our fellow guest did. Plenty of possums and other small animals about. The cottage is basic and comfortable. Paul the host couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. We will definitely be going back.

A 2 week Tablelands birding trip found us spending 3 fantastic nights & days of rainforest & animal magic at Black Bean Cottage. Loads of birds, Betongs, possums & enjoyable walks. Unfortunately no tree kangaroos but a daily Platypus appearance. Five star scenery & wildlife with a comfortable, dry, roomy rustic cottage sporting adequate facilities. Would love to return with grandchildren as so different from WA.

Yet again Possum valley was everything we expected and more. Our bird list was enormous with sightings of Satin and Golden bower birds both in their bowers. Luck was not on our side as we again did not see the illusive tree kangaroo but we did get some good sightings of the platypus down at the main pond.
We thoroughly recommend this unique and beautiful part of the tablelands. Paul has a special place, a bit rustic, a bit quirky and very different to the normal soulless accommodation on offer else where.
If you want a rustic cabin full of personality with wildlife, birds by the bucket load and rainforest charm then Possum valley is for you. If you want spotless, mindless, soulless perfection with not an ounce of personallity then choose somewhere else.
Thanks again Paul for a wonderful time.

Room Tip: Choose Blackbean cottage for pond side platypus and eel viewing choose Maple cottage for best viewl...

We (2 couples) stayed at Blackbean cottage recently and had a wonderful time. Don't come if you want 5 star shiney marble kitchen tops and glistening latest fashion bathroom. But if you want an unforgetable peaceful and wildlife filled stay then do. The cottage is 'rustic' but comfy. The wildlife is awesome. We saw platypus, tree kangaroo, paddymelon, different kinds of possum and lots of birdlife. Sitting on the verandah by the lake is unbelievably peaceful. Paul is very welcoming and helpful.
