We loved the Bald Rock walk. Good tracks, really interesting geography/geology and you get up to a good height for views over the country. Girraween national park was great too, although the climb to the top of the Pyramid requires a good head for heights! Again, excellent tracks and spectacular views. We were here in early apple season, and the fruit trees around Stanthorpe were laden. Delicious.

The granite belt just has so much to offer. Wineries, apple farms, amazing walks and simply gorgeous scenery.

The standard of cellar doors is excellent with friendly and knowledgeable staff and often access to wine makers, much as older regions used to be like before becoming too commercial. Well worth a visit. Recommend Mason House to stay if there are 3 couples with or without children.

Plan carefully the days and time of the year you visit. Quite a few wineries and restaurants, cafés are closed in the early part of the week. Thumbs up Robert Channon wines, where tasting was a very pleasant and informative experience. Also a must is to stop at Vincenzo's just north of stanthorpe - great Italian food and coffee. You can also taste and buy a lot of the granit belt wines, plus they have a fabulous deli.

The Granite Belt offers a different sort of holiday, away from the high energy Theme Parks and beach environment. More rural, with great wineries and National Parks for walking or camping, with a cooler climate than coastal Queensland. We based ourselves in Stanthorpe for four days, visiting wineries, the Wine College with its restaurant, and the fruit and local craft shops and stalls. Stanthorpe itself has a good selection of cafes and restaurants, as well as a wide range of accommodation. Less than 3 hours drive from Brisbane, it is attractive for a short break. There is a good tourist information centre in Stanthorpe, with very helpful staff for both information on surrounding attractions, and directions around Stanthorpe. A visit to the lookout above the town - look for the microwave tower, is worthwhile. We will visit the region again.
