We visited Australian Age of Dinosaurs from Winton, and it's about a 20 minute drive, on an unsealed road once you turn off the highway. You are only able see the fossil bones and the fossil preparation area by taking a tour. Our tour guide, George, was friendly and informative, and very patient in answering endless questions from our kids (8 and 10). The dinosaur bones are extraordinary, as is the story of how they are being found and dug. There is a new interpretive Centre being built, which will add to the experience. The setting is spectacular, on top of a mesa or "jump-up" with great views back across the black soil plains. There's also a short walk you can do (20 mins return) which takes you along a ridge to where the new Centre will be situated. There is no food or drink available at AAOD, so take your own and have a picnic. Volunteers are able to work on fossil preparation, but must book well ahead and stay for at least a week. See their website for more information. We were inspired and fascinated by this place, and will certainly return.
