“Would be nice to stay longer”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

My friends and I stayed for one night but loved it, it was so cosy and there was even a fireplace and complimentary marshmallows to cook. The showers were nice and while it was good to see energy efficiency in such a far out part of the world (the main lights had timers on them) it was sort of annoying when in the showers. The beds were comfortable and if you're in that part of Queensland I would recommend to stay.

I recently led an academic trip for 15 college students to Australia. We stayed in many backpacker hostels during our three weeks in the country. Without hesitation On the Wallaby was our best lodging experience. Clean, comfortable, and great food all contributed to an outstanding stay. Owner Paul and manager Tracy were great hosts. I highly recommend going on some of the excursions offered by the hostel. The night canoe trip, platypus spotting, and the rain forest waterfall hike were all rewarding experiences. If you are in the area make to stay here. It is a great experience in its self.

We stayed here as part of our camper van trip of Northern queensland. we stayed one night and didn't stay in the lodge itself but were able to park our campervan in the yard and plug, we had use of all the facilities and all for a very reasonable price! The best bit was the night canoe tour which was arranged by the lodge, we were so lucky and sore so many different animals and other wildlife, including 6 tree kangaroos (two joeys included) green tree possums, diamond python etc. Arwyn, who welcomed us to the lodge, but who was also our canoe guide, was fantastic! she has so much energy and is so enthusiastic, she made the trip what it was... Awesome! Close to the lodge is a creek where we spotted 3 platypus! tip: go after 5, don't go with a tour group, sit down and wait, loads of people told us they didn't see anything so I guess we were lucky! We also joined the lodges Aussie BBQ which was great value and catered for vegetarians!

I normally don't bother reviewing hostels but On The Wallaby is exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we really felt as if we were at home.

The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and gave great insight into the local area. The hostel itself is clean, beautifully looked after and incredibly cosy - blankets, beanbags, a woodburning stove... We didn't want to leave!

Thank you for a lovely stay :)

Room Tip: We camped on the lawn out the back :)

Amazing experience with Paul and Tracy. Felt like part of their extended family. Lodging and food were great. And Paul went way out of his way to make it all special, although I'm sure he had been to these places a million times. Really knowledgeable about the ecosystems of the area as well as the cultural aspects. Really cared that you had fun but learned a few things in the process. Love to go back. Thanks Paul and Tracy!

Me and two of my friends were traveling around Australia for a month. We heard about On the Wallaby and did the day tour then spent a few nights. This place is literally a home away from home. I have no complains at all! I would recommend this to anyone travelling as a couple, with friends or alone. They have lots of activities and it's a safe nice environment. It's the nicest hostel I stayed in while on my travels without a doubt.
The food is home made and always amazing. The staff are amazing as well.
This place is great when you're travelling because it makes you feel like you're really at home.
I would recommend this hostel 100% it made my travels so memorable and amazing and if I ever return to Australia this is my first stop!

When you walk in the door at On the Wallaby you know you are someplace special. The place has the feel of being in someone's home rather than just a typical hostel. The staff are amazing, everything is clean, and quiet. For those not wanting to share quarters there are two single rooms, each with a double bed. Great place, great value.
