“McClaren Vale Charm”
Reviewed 7 October 2013

We spent three nights at Peppermint Farm Cottage with another couple and had a very enjoyable stay. The cottage has been renovated in the country style which appears appropriate for its heritage. Paul gave us a very warm welcome and thoughtfully checked once during the weekend whether we needed anything to assist our stay and offered to change our towels, which was a very nice touch for a self-contained property.

The breakfast provisions were very generous.

I was curious about the review I read that was written in May and the comments about a few bugs. I think the reviewer was unfair. McClaren Vale is the countryside and beautiful, especially in the springtime. Forget about the odd little slow moving creature and just enjoy the quiet countryside, singing birds and the surrounding vines. Go for a walk or run along the nearby Shiraz Trail that passes between the vines, or just enjoy a drive to the various vineyards and restaurants in the area.

We all had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Thank you for your very kind words. We greatly appreciate you taking time to share your experience so that others can make informed decisions about where to stay.

I must admit that every time we receive a review alert, I hold my breath hoping that we have not overlooked something that has spoiled a guest experience. We do try very hard to anticipate our guests needs and we encourage everyone to contact us straight away if there is any sort of problem rather than waiting to post it on Tripadvisor.

Thanks again for the review and we hope to see you again one day.

My wife and I recently spent a memorable weekend at PepperMint Farm Cottage. Our hosts, Paul & Diane, couldn't do more to ensure our stay was perfect. The cottage itself is over a 100 years old but has been renovated/rejuvenated to a high standard. The view overlooking the vines was picture perfect and at night the quietness of the surrounding area ensured a good night's sleep. A great place to base yourself when next exploring the McLaren Vale wine region

Peppermint Farm was our base in the McLaren Vale area, very peaceful spot and great amenities.
Got great insights into the local wine industry from Paul - and their recommendations for local wineries and eateries were spot on.

We stayed here for a second time now and were again very pleased with this place: While being beautifully located right in the middle of the vineyards, unfortunately since last time the owner has finished a big modern house right next to it which takes a bit away from the isolation and privacy of the place. Besides that, we still loved the cute interior of the nicely renovated but historic cottage. I personally find the decor itself also a bit tasteless and old-fashioned but it works together with the historic country feel of the place. Breakfast provisions were plentiful and fresh and we love the proximity of several good wineries within walking distance (though beware of next door Peteringa, those crooks will send a highly annoying call centre onto you if you share your address with them!).

One of my work colleagues stayed here upon my warm recommendation and was outraged at the caterpillars around and since calls it "The caterpillar place" so be aware that being in the country brings along some little animals and the caterpillars are indeed plentiful both inside and outside the cottage. I personally find them fascinating little creatures and was rather afraid to accidentally step on those poor things during my stay but the cleaners could have done a better job removing all the spiders and cobwebs around the corners of the cottage prior to our arrival. I guess this is the flip side of having wild Kangaroos outside your place all the time which we absolutely loved- I would warmly recommend this place to any overseas visitors who really should stop by for a night or two if they happen to get to -otherwise dead boring and for the most of it atrociously ugly- Adelaide which is only an hours drive away.

All in all, given the absence of a Hilton or Sheraton (or anything that comes even remotely close), it's probably the best choice in the area though not exactly cheap given that it's an unserviced place where after two or three days you will have a pile of garbage (and several empty wine bottles) standing around in your kitchen.

Room Tip: Nothing to choose from, it's only one little cottage!

Thank you for your comprehensive review and we are glad that you enjoyed your second stay with us. We love to get feedback from our guests because we are always looking for ways to make staying at Peppermint Farm even more enjoyable for others.

Tripadvisor is a wonderful forum that assists travellers to make informed decisions about their travel arrangements. However, I feel a need to respond to a few of your comments.

I am not sure what you mean by "In the middle of nowhere". I assume what you mean is, "In the middle of food and wine heaven, surrounded by some of Australia's best wineries, restaurants and beaches."

You may recall that when I greeted your party on arrival I encouraged you to contact me if you needed anything. I would have been more than happy to move your "pile of garbage" to the bin which is just outside the cottage, about 10 metres from the front door. For the sake of other readers, we do a thorough mid stay clean and linen change for anyone staying longer than 3 nights unless the guests indicate they prefer not to be disturbed, which is often the case.

We do not have any "caterpillars". We do have some millipedes and yes, a few of them find their way inside on occasions. Very few of our guests have ever commented about them. It's a shame that your "outraged" friend didn't bother to contact us to request their removal. We would have happily obliged and would always do so if requested.

The "not exactly cheap given that it's an unserviced place" is uncalled for. Yes, our cottage is self contained and our web site clearly spells out all of the terms and conditions. It may be stating the obvious, but we are deliberately a different style of accommodation to the "Hilton or Sheraton" and we don't apologise for that. It is why many people, including your party if I am not mistaken, choose to stay with us.

Referring to Pertaringa as "crooks" is very unfair. The McLaren Vale region is about "boutique", "artisanal" and "family owned". With two notable exceptions, all of the wineries are family owned. You get to taste some of the best wines on the planet in beautiful surroundings free of charge. Not a bad deal. And, yes, if you give them your phone number and email address, they assume you want to be contacted by them!

Describing Adelaide as "dead boring and ... atrociously ugly", oh really? Perhaps so if one never leaves the hotel room. The Property Council of Australia rates Adelaide as Australia's most liveable city so it must have something going for it and the thousands of reviews on Tripadvisor for places to stay, eat and play in Adelaide are overwhelmingly positive. All of Australia's cities rate extremely well on a world scale and we should all celebrate the fact that we live in such a wonderful country.

We stayed at Peppermint Cottage for a week in mid-March and had a lovely time. The cottage itself is well equipped and very homely. Paul and Diana were very welcoming and always ensured that we had plenty of provisions for breakfasts, we were also treated to a bottle of wine on arrival - perfect.
Will definitely go back to the cottage again, had a very relaxing stay and loved the situation in the middle of the vineyards.

Peppermint Farm was a disappointment to us... after viewing some previous positive reviews, and paying a relatively expensive fare, we looked forward to a pleasurable experience in the old farmhouse cottage. Alas, we encountered a location too adjacent to our hosts' home, not much they could do about that, this being a historic cottage, but with a token attempt at privacy. After a decent renovation, completed without flair, the owners lost interest and the cottage provided all the welcoming of a mean spirited aunt. Warm, but not hot, water, half a loaf of sliced bread for breakfast, two limp supermarket sausages wrapped in cling plastic film together with exactly the same measure of bacon with some sad frozen hash browns ( I think ). This was not the country fare of a wine and food produce region, rather post war rationing of supermaket purchased food. The cottage was clean, but not spotless, an ancient collection of brica brac castoffs, not dusted, not loved, sat with an enormous range of McLaren Vale advertising handouts displayed too prominently. For us, it was all rather depressing, after some previous excellent accommodation offers not too far away. Peppermint Farm needs de cluttering and the owners need advice of how Australian accommodation offerings have charged since 1963. Grandma has moved on.

Your feedback is appreciated, despite being somewhat harsh. Most of the feedback here and posted on our online guestbook conflicts directly with your comments but we will take them on board. Our local heritage listed cottage was built in 1853 and for most of our guests the period décor is what they expect to see and nothing like 1963.

Peppermint Farm is beautifully situated in the middle of a vineyard and within a short drive to wineries, restaurants and the McLaren Vale and Willunga town centres. You can even walk to some of the wineries and restaurants if you're up for it.

The B&B offers plenty of provisions and is definitely the best one we've ever stayed at. The rooms have been beautifully restored and in addition to spacious bedrooms, the living room, kitchen and bathroom are very comfortable and well-equipped. We've stayed at Peppermint Farm twice with overseas guests and they all absolutely loved the setting and surrounding wildlife. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway!
