“An Oasis”

The North Star is a Gem of a Hotel, we stayed on a Monday Night and the place was fairly quiet, even so, for what is a fairly small country town the restaurant was doing a good level of trade. The food was of very good quality and there was a good variety of choices that allowed all to get something they would like.
The hotel has been through a number of different refurbishments over its life, however, the original character shines through. Each of the rooms has their own shower and toilet facilities that are quiet modern. We had a balcony room that provided the perfect venue for a late afternoon beverage. Breakfast is limited to a Continental self-serve only.
Check out opens at 10:30 in the morning, you will need to settle the account the night before if you want an earlier start.

We were looking forward to staying at this place but ended up very disappointed and actually cancelled the room we had booked for our return trip.
We first entered the bar - very rustic and the open fire was burning giving a lovely ambience. We were handed our room key and pointed to the direction of the staircase. The furniture and decor in the hallway was a bit of a shock - old, shabby and falling to bits. At the top of the stairs we entered our room and it was freezing. We tried to turn on the A/C heater and it did not work - flat batteries in the remote. In the bathroom the light above the sink was loose and not working and the toilet had no lid - broken off. After going downstairs and getting a new light bulb and batteries and being a handyman for five minutes all was good (Not what you expect when you are paying $185 a night for a hotel room). Breakfast was included in the room rate, self serve in a little alcove with no tables and chairs. One coffee plunger between 4 rooms so we had tea. Cereal and toast which we ate sitting on the end of our bed in our room. One of the other occupants asked for the kitchen to be restocked as there was no bread and hardly any cereal. The good thing about this place was the bar and restaurant.

Room Tip: No tips as I wouldn't stay here again which is a shame as Melrose is a beautiful little place an...

There is nothing boutique about this country pub.

On arrival, the staff were totally unprofessional. We were given a key, not told how to access rooms nor anything about breakfast etc.

This place is presumably the cellar door of Bundaleer Wines but the staff did not even know what a dry wine was!

The rooms may have been repainted in recent years but they are basic. One thin worn out towel per person, room not even serviced each day for the price paid, thick dust on the light fittings, rips in the sheet, inefficient aircond.

The breakfast provisions were an insult, no dining room / cooked breakfast available- you had to go a kitchette and organise your own breakfast - the bread expired 10 days ago, two glass jars of generic cereal (how old were they?) and the homebrand 3 litre fruit juice had about 4 inches in the bottom, so long had that been open for?

Decided to give the dining room a go for dinner - the snitzel was massacred - dry and burnt - I would guess it come straight out the freezer. A miserable bit of salad, being the standard lazy pub concept of a few pieces of lettuce with a few rings of onion, bit of cucumber and a slice of tomato. For a boutique pub in a region where they would have fresh products available - the standard was way below any expectations. If you want a good pub meal - go down the road to the Mt Remarkable Hotel.

Given every other accommodation in town was booked and this time of year is peak season up there - it was pretty obvious why this pub was near on empty.

I have not felt so ripped off for a while, given the money paid. Maybe they need to price the pub at its value which would be no more than $100 a night tops.

Room Tip: If you have to stay, get a blacony room - at least the view is a positive.

We stumbled upon the North Star around lunch time on a cold winter sunday. It was a welcome find - the bistro offers a great environment, with sensitive and effective renovation of the old stone hotel which takes advantage of great views out to Mount Remarkable. There was a fire, the place was comfortable and the food was good country fare. The hotel also functions as a cellar door for Bundaleer Wines which means you can taste the local drop but it also has a good wine list with reasonable prices. The service was friendly and helpful. Although we didn't stay overnight, the North Star is highly recommended as a stop en route to the Flinders Ranges and the Melrose area itself is probably worthy of a longer stay.

The property is okay, nothing great but certainly not striving towards the top in terms of customer service.

I arrived in the early evening on a winters night. After checking in via the front bar I was directed outside and down the footpath to the next door. Yet there's an internal door - which was locked and couldn't be used. There were no lights on for me to find my way in. Once I'd hunted around for a light switch I then found the room at the top of a grand staircase.

The room was nicely furnished with modern decor. The bathroom looked great and recently renovated.

But on this cold winters night the linen wan't really warm enough. There weren't many options to add more blankets to the bed.... Luckily there was a fold up bed stored in the hallway I was able borrow another blanket from to make things bearable.

The biggest issue with the property was a complete lack of breakfast options. The upstairs kitchen contained exceptionally basic provisions. The suggested cafe in town didn't actually open at the advertised time, nor even an hour later. So back to the small kitchen and some cereal. But where to eat the cereal? How about the dining room? No! That's locked and no use. Which left the verandah on coldish morning...

But here is my biggest thoughts... In a hotel that has few overnight guests, in a tourist town during the off season that closes up and doesn't reopen until 10am... Why have a 10am checkout? Why not allow guests a 2pm check out... They might then stay for lunch the next day in your bar. Why not make it 12 noon then so they can have a coffee before heading off?

The North Star Inn was a lovely surprise in the picturesque town of Melrose. Everything about the hotel's refurbishment complemented it's setting and country architecture.
Great service, good food and various levels of refurbished rooms. We were allocated the "Red Truck"which was a quirky spot to stay. It is one of 2 "trucks", which are units at the back of the hotel. Comfortable, clean and fun.
Melrose is a favourite of ours, so having discovered the North Star Inn, we shall return.

Room Tip: Upstairs verandah rooms have been refurbished to a very high standard.

The Trip Advisor ratings don't really accommodate this hotel because it is good rather than average. The bedrooms have been modernised but still retain some elements which should be tossed (i.e standard lamp) however the bed was very comfortable and the bathrooms are very nice indeed. We paid $50 extra for an upstairs room with balcony access but the door would not open! Having said that the staff were extremely friendly and rustled up a meal even though the kitchen had closed so top marks for that. The main foyer needs a little more attention. The stairway carpet has been removed which is probably for the best but the stair treads need re-varnishing so that one is unaware that a carpet used to be there. All these are little things but they would create a better first impression for the traveller. It is easier to criticise than to praise and of course the cost of renovation has to be weighed against the number of tourists who will pay for such things. A pretty fine balance for country properties.
