We really enjoyed our trip to the Whyalla maritime museum. There is a lot more to see than just the ship and we spent over an hour wandering the museum with two young kids. The tour of the Whyalla was fantastic and the tour guide included the kids which made it fun for them.

Again if you are planning to do the steel tour a visit to the ship and musuem is also a must. It basically gives one a view of the ship building industry with some great models. The kids will love the who deal including the shark stuff.

Turned up with our two excited kids not long after 10.00am, its advertised opening time on the Council website. We were then told we would have to pay $31 for the four of us and would have to wait fifty minutes until a tour at 11 o'clock. HMAS Whyalla is a disused corvette now located on land. Would have loved to see inside but wasn't going to bother hanging around. Dont get caught out like we did. Waste of time going there.

The Whyalla Maritime Museum is on the northern approach to Whyalla, with the 650 ton Australian corvette HMAS Whyalla mounted in its yard. There are daily tours over the ship which was one of the first to roll off the slipway at the Whyalla shipyard. In the museum is a section covering the 4 corvettes built here in WW2, the history of the Whyalla shipyards with a display of its ships achitect models, the BHP fleet, fish in the northern St Vincent Gulf, the local indigenous people and a large HO scale railway layout. The museum is set within a garden of native shrubs. The ship tour can take 45 minutes, and you will need about one hour to go through the museum. I was a very valuable insight into part of Whyalla's history.
