We typically visit Cleveland once or twice a year for a concert, so most of our time in the city has been spent around University Circle. However, for our anniversary we wanted to try something a little different. After calling two other area B&B's (and not getting a "welcoming" sort of feeling from either one) I called The J. Palen House. Diane's warm and enthusiastic responses to my questions about the B&B and Ohio City made me realize that this was the place to stay. There were two rooms available for the weekend we were there, and after listening to her descriptions of each we settled on Palen's Room. Located in what was once a barn around the corner from the main B&B, Palen's Room is well appointed with everything we could possibly need - a very comfortable bed & pillows, a lovely and HUGE bathroom with a fantastic jetted tub and separate shower, a flat-screen TV and a DVD player (with a nice selection of movies in the main living area of the "barn" as well as in the main house). After showing us our room and the main living areas (there is a shared kitchen and living room on the ground floor, and a private outdoor patio) Diane listened to what our interests were and offered plenty of ideas on what to do during our stay. Since we were only there for one night (and the weather wasn't cooperative) we weren't able to do everything on this trip, but we did manage to shop at the West Side Market and Penzy's Spices (it was great to be able to store our perishables in the refrigerator at the B&B!), enjoyed ridiculously delicious pommes frites at Bar Cento, and had a WONDERFUL dinner at the Flying Fig. Oh, and breakfast the following morning was excellent and served with good cheer and lively conversation.
Just a note...We have stayed in many B&B's over the past 10 years, and The J. Palen House definitely ranks among the very best. We will definitely be returning!

My wife and I stayed in the "Webster Room" with king size bed and jacuzzi after dropping our son off at a local college. We loved how relaxed we felt immediately upon going though the front door and the feeling of relaxation grew the longer we stayed. Diane is the most fun host and really made our stay special. The Ohio City neighborhood is unique and worth a stroll. Be sure to ask Diane to book you a reservation at one of the restaurants so you can receive a discount. We'll be back if when we visit our son again.

Room Tip: Webster -- King size bed, balcony and large tub/jacuzzi

My wife & I took a road trip to Pittsburgh to Cleveland, Chautauqua NY. We stayed at the J Palen House B&B in Ohio City part of Cleveland, what a treat, & great location. You can walk to almost anything you want,, gorcery store across the street & there are plenty of resturants in the area, too in walking distance. The B & B was just lovely, in a quiet neighborhood. Tied for 1st place as one our favorites B & B we have stayed at over the years. Diane makes the best 3 coursce breakfast, with many choices of beverages to choose from. Take your bikes, we toured the city on our bikes. She made us feel at home in Cleveland. When we head back to Cleveland, we will be staying at the J Palen house B&B again!

We had a wonderful overnight stay. The service is beyond excellent, led by a most kind and welcoming host. The inn is very comfortable and home-like, set in a growing neighborhood experiencing a development resurgence.

Located in historic Ohio City...we walked to many good restaurants and attractions. Short drive to beach, zoo, museums, theater, major league sports.

We stayed in The Palen Room in the Lofts...on a quite street, around the corner from the main house. Properties are meticulously maintained. Attention to details. Outdoor private garden...with comfortable seating.

Our room had a comfortable king. High open beamed ceiling. Really comfortable chairs, great viewing hi-def flat screen. Decorated with expensive and thoughtful antiques. Huge Jacuzzi , plus a luxurious shower. Very quite. Cool air conditioning plus overhead fan. Window that opened too.

Diane is a fantastic host with a big smile who made us feel welcomed the moment we met her. She had tons of high energy...friendly and engaging. She is the person responsible for making this experience excellent. I would recommend this little inn / bed 'n breakfast. This is a great place in the historic district. We had fun. Thumbs up!

We ended up at J Palen on a quick weekend getaway trip to Cleveland after finding it on TripAdvisor, and were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves not only at a great bed & breakfast getaway in the city, but we can't say enough good things about the Old City neighborhood we stumbled upon (thanks to the information binder in the room). While not an overly large area, the walkable streets offer the amazing WestSide market, a brewing company, restaurants, European-style bakeries, a cool discount bookstore and other little shops. Our room was comfortable, clean, and featured a 2-person jacuzzi. One of the owners Diane was our host and also served us breakfast both mornings, she couldn't have been sweeter. It's funny, we're not exactly sure that we would necessarily have a reason to return to downtown Cleveland, but if we ever do or are passing through, we would definitely swing through Old City and stay here again!

We decided to make Cleveland a stop on our road trip to Niagara Falls. We picked the J. Palen House because of it's nearness to the RR HOF and because it was in walking distance to several Food Network featured spots. We could not have been more pleased. The room was excellent and breakfast was exceptional.
