Great place. Very cozy, quiet, and clean. We stayed here during the holidays while visiting family. Service was excellent. We even slept in a couple of days and missed the cleaning service, so on the second day they left a whole set of fresh toiletries and towels outside of our door. So kind. We stayed in the Miller Suite, which was quiet and very large. This place is close to lots of cute restaurants, cafes, and bars, which was very convenient. Certain parts of the neighborhood are a little edgy, but Ohio City is hipster like that.

Great location for exploring Cleveland. The location is in easy walking distance to a great many restaurants and to the West Side Market. We were in town to ride at Ray's Indoor Mountain Bike Park and this location was perfect. Less than 10 minutes from the park. We stayed in Palen's Room in the "Loft". Palen's room was very comfortable, the 2-person tub was soothing after a days riding, the bed was very comfortable, the sheets super soft...the towels plush. The Loft was great. Easy parking on the street, never had an issue finding a convenient spot. The Loft also had a full kitchen shared by 2 rooms. This was great for use in storing snacks and lunch food for use in our cooler for the day's ride and for chilling ice-packs. The Loft also had a communal DVD library which was fun, treats left in the kitchen in the afternoon and a pod-type coffee/tea maker. The main Inn is across the street from a full supermarket, very convenient for picking up supplies. We visited a couple restaurants in downtown and took a taxi. The cost is $8.00 plus tip. Breakfast was in the main Inn, literally around the block from the Loft. Delicious offering every morning. We stayed 4 nights and each morning the breakfast was completely new. Very fun. The Innkeepers were wonderful, full of knowledge about everything Cleveland. Loved the champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for New Years Eve! What a treat, thank you!

Go figure. I'm a life long Northeast Ohio resident and I plan a get away weekend in downtown Cleveland. To celebrate my wife's birthday she suggested we go low key this year. After 38 years of marriage I know what that means. After reading a review about the J Palen House B & B in the Cleveland Plain Dealer it struck me that we didn't have to drive for hours to enjoy a get away weekend. I booked The Roost, one of the many rooms at the J Palen House for Dec 15th 2012. I highly recommend it. The house is on a cool residential street in a very walkable and safe neighborhood in Ohio City. The Roost is located in the back half of an old barn that someone very creatively has converted in to the warmest, quietest and most comfortable two story facility I've been in. The morning breakfast is expertly prepared. Eat with the other guests on a big family room size table or by yourself at a smaller two person table. Walk to the many Ohio City bars, breweries, restaurants, wine bars is very convenient. Walk to several craft shops, a glass blowing factory. More than enough choices within a 10 minute walk. No designated driver needed. Downtown Cleveland and the Cavaliers, Indians and Browns is a short drive. The Tremont area and the famous Christmas Story house is a short drive. The famous West Side Market and the Great Lakes Brewing Company is a short 10 minute walk. So much to do and not enought time. If you're coming in from out of town and don't want to stay at a big hotel or if you're a native Clevelander and want to get to know your city better this is the place. J Palen House Bed and Breakfast is a great kicking off place for a full weekend.

Room Tip: The Roost comes with it's own private patio for an outdoor cocktail hour. For a winter stay it has a fireplace. It also has a full kitchen.

I called on a Thursday to check availability and was easily able to book a stay the following night. My wife and I couldn't arrive at check-in time and were accommodated with ease. We booked a room called the studio, located a short walk from the main house. The studio was a great place to stay - private but in the heart of it all. After getting settled we walked a block to Light Bistro and had an excellent late dinner. Upon returning to the studio we had everything needed for a comfortable nights stay. We woke up to about 4" snow on the sky lights above the bed and headed to the main house for breakfast - fresh fruit and yogurt, tea and a delicious quiche. We spent the day shopping, laughing and eating at some great local shops/restaurants. Everything was in easy walking distance, folks were genuinely friendly and helpful. All in all batteries recharged = huge success!

We went to Market Garden Brewery for my husband's birthday, and as we didn't want to drive home afterward, I had reserved the Palen room as a surprise for him. The reservation experience was very pleasant, and the room was clean and lovely. We had a very relaxing soak in the Jacuzzi tub before dinner, and slept amazingly on the bed (to the point that we checked the mattress tag to buy one for ourselves). The entire home was beautiful and relaxing. We ended up staying out later than we thought and missed breakfast, but we plan to come again.
