“So much better”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

We returned for the 1st time in 16 months and were very pleased! We stayed 2 nights and ate 2 meals while we were there. Dinner in the Lodge restaurant was great! The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth tender, with excellent flavor, and no extra charges for gravy or substitutions. The buttermilk mashed potatoes were great, and the cooked carrots were very nice. Our room was very clean and comfortable. We will be making a trip back just for dinner soon! Thanks to current management for the improvements!

Room Tip: Ask for ask for a lakeside room.

We had a mini family reunion the weekend of Aug 8-10. Dad & fam from Louisville, sister from Nashville, us from Dayton. The drive was quick for us at just over an hour. We booked late and weren't able to secure a cabin but will plan ahead next time. Five of us stayed in the lodge. The porch was a nice feature. Would have loved to have lakeview (also not available). The beds are small (double, not queen). My son slept in a sleeping bag between the beds to help make room for everyone. Our room had a mini fridge and little micro. Also double sinks (one on each side of bathroom door). The room was relatively clean but needed updates. The sinks appeared to be fairly new but the tub faucet showed quite a bit of rust. The TV offered several cable channels to help entertain the kids.

We ate at the dining room for our first night's dinner. The food choices are traditional. We had brisket and chicken pot pie. Kids ate grilled cheese and a burger. The wine selection is adequate and reasonable. The brunch was very good. Saturday morning offered made-to-order omelets. Sunday was custom pancakes. I loved the eggs, bacon and fresh fruit. One bagel I selected had a bit of mold on it but I didn't say anything to the staff.

Daily activities were fun and plentiful. We enjoyed the naturalist visit on Saturday morning. Our kids loved the diving for tokens event in the outdoor pool. They also offered several crafts and learning activities throughout each day.

Outdoor pool was too cold for most of our family but the kids were more tolerant. The indoor pool was heated and preferred. It is open until 10:00 PM and a great way to help the kids spend energy before bedtime.

We used the fishing pier on the lake. Two of the side piers were unhinged which made them unsafe. Our little girl (age 6) almost fell in along with a slew of tackle box contents. Be careful when stepping out.

The other side of our family had a couples cabin. It was one of the only pet-friendly options. Super cute, super small. We enjoyed a cookout there the second night of our stay. Charcoal grill, fire pit & picnic table were wonderful. The cabin held a double bed and a pull-out chair for one. The kitchenette was handy for the mac & cheese we microwaved and the corn on the cob we boiled on the stove. Large pot was helpful although we couldn't find grill utensils so bring your own unless you want to flip your burgers with an ice scraper like we did.

Overall we enjoyed our stay very much and we hope to make our little reunion a regular event.

I spent a weekend at the lodge with a group of 7 college friends and the lodge was so much better than I expected. Rooms were spacious with an extra vanity/sink outside the bathroom itself (and one in the bathroom, too!) Great room amenities including iron, hair dryer, small frig, microwave, coffee maker ... As well as coffee and condiments, lotion, shampoo, etc. We had a balcony overlooking the lake that was perfect for morning coffee or wine at night. Be sure to ask for a lakeside room if possible!
The breakfast buffet in the restaurant downstairs was excellent, and be sure to make s'mores in the evening at one of the four fire pits overlooking Acton Lake. All the employees were very friendly and courteous and made our stay very comfortable.

Room Tip: Lake view is preferable, and suggest the top floor to get away from potential noise near the pool

This place is cool! I love the architecture. Some areas of lodge are dated but overall a pretty nice place. Nice views of the beautiful lake. Nice looking pool--did not get a chance to use it. Had breakfast buffet. Pancakes were the BEST! Servers seemed a little disorganized and stressed.

Will be coming back soon for a longer stay.

We enjoyed our stay at Hueston Woods cabins (cottages), which are located near the lodge. (The check-in is handled by the lodge, by the way, so from my quick visit, the lodge looked very promising!)

At first glance, the cabin seemed impossibly small for the two of us and our dog. But the cabins contain everything you need, just tucked into a small space. We spent most of our time hiking, cooking out, and visiting attractions, so it's more than fine when the weather is nice.

Our cabin had a nice kitchenette, complete with dinnerware and dishtowels. Tiny refrigerator and no freezer in our case, so don't go overboard buying refrigerated food. We enjoyed relaxing in the evening on the couch or at the picnic table in front of the cabin.

(Also, not all cabins permit pets, so check to be sure when you reserve yours.)

FYI, the cabins are tucked far back in the property, so you'll need to drive to get to the beach, lodge, or marina.

One small complaint: I had a geocaching app that I was eager to try out, but reception was so poor I couldn't get service. The cabin wifi is also very poor, so give up your gadgets and just enjoy the great outdoors!

This is the second time we have had a family reunion at Hueston Woods. The first time we all stayed in cabins and this time we were split in lodge and cabins. I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and modernness of the lodge rooms. It was very clean, though the shower was not fantastic, it was adequate. The beds were very comfortable and linens pristine. Have stayed in Indiana lodges many times and loved the dining areas. Was not quite as pleased with dinner at HW but the breakfast was very nice. Staff that we met were wonderful!! Maid staff were more than accommodating and lady who made the omelets was most pleasant. The front desk lady went out of her way to help me fax documents and even print. Really helped me out. Wifi was spotty to say the least, but we are there to disconnect anyway. We will definitely be back. One of our favorites.

This is a somewhat older facility that has been well maintained. It offers a rustic décor that fits with the state park setting. The facility itself is quite nice. The spacious lobby offers a good view of the lake. In addition, there are multiple smaller lobby-like seating areas throughout the hotel. Amenities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools as well as a large game room in addition to all the amenities of the park itself. Our room was a reasonable size, but not quite as large as most hotel rooms. The room included a desk and desk chair, but there was no electric outlet at the desk. We did have a great view of the lake from the private balcony. The bathroom was small with a small counter, but the shelf underneath provided adequate storage space. The bathroom had no tub, just a shower, but it was one of those with multiple jets at various levels. The room rate was quite reasonable, particularly considering all the amenities available.

Sitting on one of our decks overlooking Acton Lake is a great way to relax and enjoy mother nature.
