We just returned from a week in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico where we ate several times at the best taqueria in town. We told our driver "take us someplace local and authentic", so he did. Several times we dined there, we were the only people from "north-of-the-border"... all their other customers were locals. The place was packed with a line on the street.
Guess what? Los Gauchos (actually spelled "Los Guachos") IS JUST AS GOOD.
They offer absolutely excellent Al Pastor (pork slow-roasting on a big spit) everything - tacos, burrito, and a torta (sandwich) that is my favorite (good bread, grilled crispy in a sandwich press, with al pastor, good onion, refried beans, tomatoes, and a little roasted pineapple from the top of the al pastor roasting spit... yummy).
The fish tacos are really delicious. The Horchata (a milky rice drink) is the best I've ever had.
Their other meats are OK, but can be a little dry. Their sign says "best Al Pastor in America". Go with that and you'll be happy.
Prices are fair. Service is friendly. Most days, you'll feel like a tourist in Mexico... lots of Mexican customers (always a good sign in an ethnic restaurant).
it's just like we're back in Playa Del Carmen. VERY, very highly recommended...
