“A Piece of History”

Monticello III Canal Boat Ride
Reviewed 17 June 2014

A pleasant though short trip, smooth ride with great scenery. The narrator was well versed in the area history of the Canals and how important they were to commerce for the State of Ohio before the railroads came. Do not recommend for small children as you must sit and listen. There were several boys 8-10, they seemed to enjoy the trip and asked several questions.

A canal ride for two...we ended up being the only riders on this canal boat and could not have been happier to hear all the fascinating history from Fred, our guide. No only was Fred knowledgeable, but his quest for living life at 80+ years of age was inspiring. The ride takes about an hour, and yes, there are mosquitos, but the do offer OFF! towelettes for .50 cents each to help. Because you are traveling in still water, you will have mosquitoes, and that is not a reason to miss this opportunity...just be prepared. The canal boat was about a mile walk from Roscoe Village on a marked trail or you can drive. Boathouse has rest rooms, trinkets and cold drinks and snacks....Take a moment to pet the gentle giant horses that pull the boat to thank them for their hard work. A welcome respite will visiting Roscoe Village.

They should warn you about the mosquitoes here because they are really bad. My daughter was in tears for most of the ride and the tour guide kept giving us dirty looks. It was pretty on the canal, but not worth the hassle.

The ride is about half an hour on a canal boat pulled by a team of horses. The narrator was well informed, a retire teacher I believe.

After taking the tour at Roscoe Village, the boat ride really helped understand what it would be like to live life on the canal back in the 1800s. My children loved the horses and the captain's stories of the canal. We thought it was great!
