“A chilled out summer resort”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Me, my hubby and 10-year old son went to this really super resort in Coorg last summer (May 2014) and it was one of the best we have ever been to. Though it's well away from madikeri (but set In the center so that all sightseeing places are around it), madikeri is the main town in coorg with lots of stay options, we chose porcupine castle simply becoz it looked divine and the reviews were fantastic. And we chose right. Our cottage on the mountain edge, looked down on the tree filled valley, was huge with a balcony, touching the tree tops. The food was tasty with a decent variety. A bicycle path winding around the resort was dreamy. But the best was the infinity edged pool, with a breathtaking view of the mountains and valleys, we soaked in the pool watching the beautiful sunset, sipping hot coffee with a chilled breeze blowing around us. Ohh... It was heavenly. Brijesh, the owner took us on his coffee and rubber plantation tour in his adventure jeep. What a joyride. The beautiful wild environs, flowers and flowers, the smell of coffee and spices.. If you love nature, this one is for you. But no tv, indulge in cycling, swimming, basketball, badminton, etc. a dj plays most nights, but I really can do without it. Strongly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: The cottage-rooms are all nice, touching the tree tops rising from the valley.

Feel and Breath fresh and crisp air in the midst of natures haven.Relax and unwind with the sound of chirping birds which you will never hear in the city hussle and bustle.
Down in the valley there are coffee plantations and variety of spices grown.
The food and the staff both have the twist and spice of life.

Room Tip: The chalets are the best rooms for view.

After disappointment in Mysore's Royal Garden Porcupine was a great relief. We found the place online and did not regret. It is built with great planning skills and satisfy every needs in terms of accommodation, food and atmosphere. Team is very helpful, however reception should be more updated in terms of local attraction accessibility and availability for tourists and improve guest service skills. Its clean, neat, well organized and children friendly. Passion for nature and experience in coffee growing is the driven factor for the people who run it and one can learn a lot about the surrounding flora and fauna including coffee plantations. Both room and bathroom were spacious and clean with great view. The swimming pool is as great as it looks online, its very clean with amazing view.

Room Tip: all rooms are good.

My husband and I chose this hotel from this website so we didn't really have any idea what this resort is going to be like. PCR completely exceeded all our expectations. We chose a mountain view room. It has to be said that the website does this place no justice. The rooms are huge, with a private balcony. The view was absolutely breathtaking.
The resort is pretty much off the beaten track - a lot of other visitors had their own vehicles but we didn't bring our vehicle so spent all our time at the resort. On the second morning we went for a plantation walk. We were taken for the walk by the resort guide- Yesudas. He was friendly informative and went above and beyond what was needed. He was really enthusiastic and knew his stuff. We really enjoyed the walk, learnt a lot, took some amazing pictures and just had fun.
The staff was really thoughtful and promt. Rohit was another member of the staff who was really into the little details to make everything special. He remembered the table by the window we liked at the restaurant and set that table for us. He also got coffee for us from town.
The food was good not great. But the service was prompt. The pool is beautifully located , we could swim for hours just looking at that view from the pool.
We just loved it.....and plan to go back there soon. We totally recommended this resort.

Room Tip: The mountain view rooms are huge with a private balcony. The valley rooms have a better view of the...

We (An adventure travel company) organized a corporate team outing in Coorg, so we booked rooms in Porcupine Castle for the team. And found it a great peaceful resort to relax and enjoy the nature. The whole team was happy to stay in such a nice resort. Breathtaking view, clean, luxurious and has a very cooperative and helping staff. Must visit..

Room Tip: Tree houses are very nice and rooms facing the valley offer views no less than heaven.

I travelled with family in mid July 2014 in the thick of monsoon. We started the journey at 7 am and inaugurated with a breakfast at kadambam restaurant just outside chennapatna to savour on the puliyagara - the breakfast quality and price beats any of the kamaths hands down. We did not get any rain pour throughout the onward journey. We passed by srirangapatna and then took the ring road outskirts of Mysore just beside Columbia Asia hospital. There is one more route through KRS which is before srirangapatna which we chose to avoid as the roads were not great a year back. The ring road was not as great but not as bad either. We reached the hunsur road shortly. The quality of the hunsur road was not as good as it used to be though for a short stretch only after which the roads and trees give you an airy feel. After we passed hunsur, we came to a point where there were 2 roads one leading to periya patina, kushalnagar etc and the one on the left leads to virajpet directly. We decided to take the latter being a shorter route inspite of reviews that the roads are not very great. The first few kms were good and then for about 8 km we had a miserable patch where you can drive only at 20kmph in 2nd gear. The other route was a longer one by probably 25-30 km but the drive was completely smooth. The bump roads ended in a check post and from there on it was a smooth drive. I read in a review that the entrance to porcupine was very narrow and difficult to get in but it was fairly routine and nothing to worry about. The slope leading to parking is a little steep but again nothing that the first gear cannot handle. We were greeted by the folks there with umbrellas just as the drizzle had started. We had booked treetop 2 for my father who travels in a wheel chair bad and we had a ramp from the road to the room so it was pretty smooth. The tree top is a wonderful experience as you feel more closer to the trees and forest. The room was neat though smaller compared to other chalets. But we had a leaking problem with water trickling down from the roof at different points after 4 hours of checking in. We decided to shift to a mountain view room and were compensated with a complementary dinner buffet.
The mountain view room had a roomy balcony and the view of the forest and mountains was very good as well. The rooms were pretty large with a small LCD TV and Tatar sky connection and quite a number of channels for my father who was mostly in the room.

The property is not very big but the views around are fascinating and relaxing for a good walk or sit out. The restaurant look and feel is beautiful with a view of the surrounding hills. The swimming pool looked good but was cold for us to dive in. Overall the atmosphere was Excellent and would highly recommend this place to just sit and relax around the butterflies and flora. We went to madikeri but was raining a lot with too much it's to see anything around us. The resort seemed a better way to spend time.

The food quality was mixed. The veg buffet spread and quality was bad as compared to the price of Rs.500 per head. However if you order the food ala carte it is much better. The food was served piping hot and was much better. Better to go for separate order.

The staff were helpful and courteous. We did not have any complaints. Kudos to them.

Google maps was impeccable throughout the journey with last mile navigation and we just followed the directions without a doubt.

Overall a great vacation and worth the time and money if you are looking for a calm and scenic place to slow down a busy life in the city.
