“R&R Mini-Break”
Reviewed 5 September 2013

My husband and I shared a wonderful evening at the Lakehouse Inn. First, from the deck that overlooks the lake, we sipped local wine and watched the sun set. Then we enjoyed dinner and wine in the restaurant. Later, we got a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed on the 2nd floor of the Inn. Breakfast was nice and although you can order from a menu, they offered to bring a little of everything. We toured the county for a few hours before we returned for a couple's massage at the spa across the street. Overall, a very nice and relaxing location to reconnect.

Room Tip: The Sturgeon Suite is 3 rooms: main bedroom, bathroom with jacuzzi tub and another smaller room with...

I've never stayed in a bed and breakfast before, and I probably never will again. I guess I'm just more of a hotel type.

I went to GOTL with two other women, and we had booked about a week before we planned on going. Meaning that the pickings were slim when it came to rooms (meaning that the Lodge was booked, so we made reservations here). When we arrived, my heart immediately sank. It just looked trashy. I know that the professional pictures usually tell a different story, but it was still surprising. The "winery" area had these large metal vats outside which made it look like a junkyard. Not impressed.

We got there around noon and went to check in. When we walked in, the woman at the desk immediately told us that check in was not until 3:00. She didn't ask what room we were to stay in, what name our reservation was under, etc. She just rudely told us to come back in three hours. Once again, not impressed.

We asked another staff member about restaurant recommendations for lunch. This woman was a lot nicer- she told us that their restaurant was closed for dinner, but open for lunch (of course we would be there the one night of the week that it was closed- Tuesday, FYI). So we went over for lunch. The restaurant is a different story. Terrible service, very limited menu. For a third time, not impressed.

We went to other wineries and came back to check in. We were to stay in cottage #3. This "cottage" was like a studio apartment. The dining room table and chairs didn't match. There was one air conditioning unit. The shower looked unclean. The king bedroom had maybe one foot on each side until you hit the wall, and three feet at the most in front of it. There wasn't much else but the bed in that room.

Also, the "spa" and event room are across the road. We didn't use the spa, but if I was going to pay $50 or so for a pedicure, I would rather not walk across a frequently-used road and a gravel parking lot in my foam flip-flops.

We ended up going to the Lodge for dinner. We spent more time there than we did here, honestly. I can't say anything about breakfast- we actually ended up leaving that same night to sleep in our own beds.

This place does have a certain sort of shabby charm, if you're into that sort of thing. It just turns out that I'm not.

I just wanted to respond and say that I’m sorry that you are more of a Hotel person and not a B&B person. The day you arrived we were actually bottling some of our wines and that is why you saw the vats outside of the press room. Most of the people that came on the property or were staying with us were very excited to check out the process and watch what was going on as this is not a typical daily occurrence.
Our front desk clerk didn’t mean to offend you when she told you what time check in was. She just wanted you to be aware of the time when your cottage would be ready and to let you know that you had plenty of time so you could enjoy the many wineries and other attractions in our area.
The cottage does have two bedrooms along with the kitchen area with a full range and refrigerator and a small dining room table with chairs along with a sitting room that has a sofa and an armchair. The bedrooms in the cottages have as big a bed we can possibly fit in them - a queen or king bed in them -as most people today generally have queens or kings at home and feel more comfortable in them. There is not a ton of extra space in the bedrooms but again, it gives our guests the most comfortable sleeping areas. We also tell guests that you won’t be spending much time inside as everyone wants to be outside enjoying the wonderful views!
I wish you were more of the B&B type, but I hope that you get a chance to stay in our area again and experience all of the charm that this area of Lake Erie has to offer.

My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. We stayed in the "Lake Erie Suite" which was beautiful. The room was clean and very charming. There was a separate sitting room with a day bed, sofa, electric fireplace, tv, and a small kitchenette with a mini refrigerator and microwave. The bedroom had a very comfy king size bed, jacuzzi overlooking the lake, and a private bathroom with a shower. The room got a little warm (there's not a separate thermostat in the rooms) even with the 3 ceiling fans, so we had to open the windows. Luckily it was a cool night, so we enjoyed feeling the breeze from the lake. All very nice. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The great room in the inn had many sitting areas, board games and complimentary cookies and coffee.

The property grounds were very well manicured. The landscaping was gorgeous. We enjoyed sitting the chair outside, watching the sunset. We had dinner at the winery. My husband ordered the BBQ pulled pork - he loved it, and I had the apple walnut? salad...it was also pretty good. We ordered a volcano cake - which was clearly frozen and drizzled with some kind of raspberry sauce and canned whipped cream - would not recommend that dish. Our meals also came out on paper plates and plastic baskets and we were given plastic utensils. We felt it might have been a little too casual, especially for our anniversary dinner. We shared a bottle of "Just Peachy" wine - it was good, but not worth the $22 price tag. However, the view was gorgeous - you are pretty much on the water!

A breakfast was included with the room and was served in Crosswinds Grill a few steps from the Inn. It was ok...we were given a yogurt & fruit cup, as well as your choice of eggs, bacon/sausage/or ham, home fries, and toast - OR- the daily special which was lemon blueberry pancakes, home fries, and choice of meat. Service was very slow, but it's hard to complain when it's free. There was only one girl working and she was doing her best, but she could've used some help!

Overall, we had a wonderful trip and would love to come back again!

Went for anniversary and 4th of july celebration. Stayed in room #1 which was small but clean. If you plan on spending all your time in a room then don't opt for this, but if you want a cozy place tto just sleep before exploring it's fine. They even had a small bottle of champagne chillrd waiting for us with happy anniversary greetings. Staff very freindly and helpful. Excellent restaurant and outdoor wine and comfort foot patio. Outdoor seating with fantastic view of lake erie and saw geneva fireworks from comfort of Inn without crowds. Nice lounge with free coffee and pastry and porch setting to meet and converse with other guests. Very relaxing atmosphere.

Room Tip: If you plan on being in a room long or need space, then get a cottage.

The Lakehouse Inn is beautiful in the summer. The decks leading down to the lake are surrounded by meticulous landscaping including plants and plentiful flowers. We had a birthday and wedding here. The parties were very well done- one party had to be moved inside because a storm popped up and the staff did a beautiful job accommodating us. Adrienne and Patty worked the events and they were very nice and worked hard making both events special. The dinners at both events were good and fair priced. The appetizer trays are somewhat skimpy for the price. We had a fruit tray at the one event and they cut strawberries in fourths.

The rooms in the house are very nice but somewhat small. I would not rent the cabins again. They are rather rustic for the price. They have been recently renovated by someone who clearly does amateur work. There is one window air-conditioner so the bedrooms are hot when the doors are shut. There was a big gap around the air-conditioner where bugs can come in.
Work was being done on the exterior of the cabins while we were there so when kids were taking a nap, there was hammering on the outside of the cabin- unacceptable when the cabins are rented out. The shower has a water saving shower head and you get a little more than a mist to rinse your hair. The control is cheap and we had to set it at just the right spot to get the water to stop. When you arrive, there is a little basket of snacks and chocolates as well as coffee in the kitchen of the cabins. These things were not replaced everyday even though you pay the same price every night. I've never stayed anywhere where the bathroom items were not refilled everyday.

Breakfast is in their restaurant. They give you a good big meal. We stayed three days and it would be wise to skip the toast. It came out tasting like stale bread-you could have used it for croutons. Everyone in our group said the same thing about the toast. Their homemade sausage is very good.

Both of my brothers are very involved with wine and chatted with the owner. He was very nice to them and gave my one brother a bottle of wine on the day we left.

Room Tip: Avoid the cabins.

Each year the place gets better and better. The deck is as beautiful a place as you will find anywhere. The staff is very friendly and professional. We had an outstanding dinner at the Crosswinds restaurant. Nothing negative to say, we love the place.

Room Tip: The cottages have been remodeled

Upon arriving we found the grounds in beautiful condition, with pleasant employees everywhere. We stayed in the cottage which was well appointed, newly remodeled and very clean. Walking downtown was easy and there you find multiple restaurants and taverns. Plenty of things for the kids as well with a water slide and putt- putt golf on the oldest course under continuous operation in America. Sitting at the beachside you could enjoy food & drink while overlooking Lake Erie and a gorgeous sunset.

Room Tip: Cottages # 2 and 3 was excellent.
