This beautiful hotel has stunning views, especially from the dining area and from the balconies of the cottages. It is really well appointed and very well maintained as well. Food is excellent - try the North-Eastern picks on the menu. There is a great shop selling a lot of handicrafts from the North-Eastern states. There is a spa as well, though I didn't check it out.
The only problem with the hotel's location is that any time you need to travel beyond Shillong (to Cherrapunji, or Mawlynnong - both highly recommended), you will have to plough through a crazy amount of traffic around Shillong. Definitely try to leave early and to avoid the evening work rush as well.
Also, there are quite a few stairs to navigate up and down between the rooms, reception and dining area, which could be something to keep in mind for people who can't walk around too much.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Ri Kynjai translates into Khasi as land of serenity. This Spa-Resort presiding over the picturesque Umiam lake 16kms from Shillong is aptly named "Ri Kynjai - Serenity By The Lake". The architecture is inspired and derived from the original Khasi thatch huts. Supported on tall circular stilts on the terrace of the hotel blocks are the hybrid cottages derived from vernacular Khasi architecture. These cottages serve to portray the transition from tradition to modernity and have an interpretation of the traditional upturned boat roof done in metallic thatch fused to modern gables. Each cottage has a fireplace in the living/ bedroom area and the mezzanine floor has an additional bedroom arrangement. ... more less
