“Mrs Morgan's Legacy, maintained well but could have been better”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

It was told that Mr. Morgan had the money and Mrs Morgan, the taste, not sure how far that is true or if it was the other way around but still, someone did have the eye and the knack of building this quite and not so little Villa in a sublime location in Kalimpong, the lesser famed sister of Darjeeling - the queen of Hills in West Bengal. It is just so nice without being over the top! There are quite a few Pluses: The location - far from the main taxi stand (INR 80 by reserved car) it takes you away from the " tourist" zone to "vacation zone" and nestled across the Golf course. The view : peek at the mountain range early in the morning or on winter days when clouds dont hover around. The garden : Rich in various different types of flora and a well manicured lawn, with some stone benches in strategic places, the greens add to the relaxation. One should go there just to relax, to see the mountains , to feel the rain or get envolped by the mist, listen to the birds, look at the starlit sky and relax. Hugely recommended. But hey- Thats all been planned by Mr & Mr. Morgan 100 years back with the money they made from indigo & jute - what happened next? well apart from holding the house together and making necessary maintenance - not much. Though the staff and the Manager (Mr. Rumba) is very very helpful, eager to assist always and can be found late in the evening for helping you out, I guess the Tourism Office needs to use this property as a model and create a luxury segment. The library needs to be spruced up- currently it has 3 yes, you heard right 3 books and they should also keep the fireplaces going! The cuisine needs to be worked upon, while the local staple food is fine but a place like this must have a "Tea Session" with cakes and savouries to make this place come alive. These are heritage buildings and one is lucky to have one , why not make best use of it. Highly recommended for visit but if only the govt team worka little bit more and take this property to it true potential. I and many would be so so Pround and Glad!

Room Tip: You have to book atleast couple of months in advance as it is always in demand but Do Not book the s...

Morgan house is really good and nestled between the golf course and the greenery in Kalimpong. Slightly away from the main town, hence quiet and peaceful. But if you are the type who likes to keep visiting the town, then it may be a problem.

The food was quite good and was mostly made-to-order. It helps if you order during the previous meal - it is easier for them to plan. Tea was available whenever we needed it and they made it afresh.

Since the lodge was mostly empty when we went, some of the locals were having a drink party on a saturday evening thanks to the support of the manager.

The lounge is really beautiful with a real old English look to it and french windows overlooking the gardens. The gardens themselves were well maintained and crisp. We went just after the rains and the showers helped them look fresh and well kept.

If you want a taxi, get in touch with the manager before hand and he will call for one. Since it is out of the town, the prices are a little steep, but the stay will be really worth it, especially if you want to unwind.

Visited the Lodge but was not able to stay there as it was undergoing massive renovations which they said would be completed by October 2012. After which I am sure that the lodge is going to have a very good look. The lodge now looks much better from the outside than these current pictures you have here therefore, i have uploaded new one of the Lodge which were taken on July 2012.

Hi.Stayed here for our honeymoon. the service was pathetic. There were no other guests in the lodge during that time. There was only one attendant from late afternoons who barely managed to attend to your call when you needed the most. The first evening, current went off and no body came with any candles or anything till we shouted for it.It was absolutely pitch dark as this lodge didnt have a generator. The food options were very very limited. The staff didnt really understand what you meant. It was quite scary evening onwards.Hard to reach the city center from here if you dont have your own transport arranged.Only this thing is the army golf area just on the opposite which gives an amazing view during the day time. The rooms were spacious but the geaser didnt work and we had to be shifted to another room for getting warm water. The room charges in comparison to other nice hotels in the city center and the services offered there were quite steep.
