The road winds up the hill from the bazaar and the noise and dust disappear. Suddenly the taxi turns sharp left and down a steep drive to the front door of Gurudongma House. The staff come running and in a matter of moments you are sitting in the garden gazebo with a cup of tea and some tiny ctisp pakoras.
There are two comfortable ensuite rooms in the main house and, my favourite, an upstairs appartment in the garden annexe. Meals are taken in the dining room in the main house and are
generous and delicious.
Catherine and/or General Jimmy are wonderfully welcoming and when you stay in Gurudongma House you are a guest - not a tourist.
The garden is peaceful and pretty and there is a good view of Kanchenjunga from the (easily accessible) roof of the garage.
It is a pleasant walk down to the town, although I prefer to get a taxi back up.
